Um...that is completely personal preference. Surely you realize that we ALL have different priorities in life and that we choose to spend our money accordingly.

Personally, I love travel I'm headed to Europe at Christmas, and paying for my son to go as well. I have traveled a lot, with him and on my own, and to say that "after its over you are left with nothing" could not be further from the truth, in my view. We have so SO many fantastic memories, so many rich experiences - I don't regret a single cent that I spend on vacations and travel. I plan on spending a lot more in the future.

I will never understand for someone who lives in Miami year-round why they have to go to places like Puerto Rico,Jamaica or the Dominican Republic...If I wanted to see darker people;heat and water...I'd rather stay in Miami and save the money or buy something I'd really appreciate.
Same thing for the ones who have to go on a cruise 3-4 times a year...
Even if it was given to me;what am I goinna do on a cruise ship ?..I don't like people...I don't drink...I have to watch what I eat..I'm too old and handicapped to play shuffleboard or any other activity that requires movement...and once I lose my money in the casino,I would want to throw myself overboard.
Seriously...actually travelling during a vacation would stress me out so much that when/if I'd get home..I would need another vacation just to be able to un-stress.
We've had marvelous cruises. Didn't spend a dime in the casino or at the bar. We left the ship every morning to explore the scenery and experience the local culture. Had fabulous dinners and met wonderful people each time. Running around the deck every morning was exhilarating. I think I actually lost weight on each cruise LOL. Some of my absolutely favorite vacations were cruises.

Maybe you should just not leave your house.

I would much rather just visit my family for a long weekend and go boating at my brothers lake and do basically the same thing for free. Or last year a took a "boys trip" to Denver with some friends. All we did was drink at bars the whole time and cost me about 1K. Really wasn't worth it at all to me even though I don't see them often anymore.
Then don't do that. DUH.

And there's nothing wrong with spending money on your home either. We just put in a new deck and when we're sitting out there on a beautiful sunny day or warm starry night, we feel like we're on vacation.

Yup! I have spent a bundle in the last 5-6 years...new roof, new kitchen counters, island, new floors, new windows, paver patio, new shed...$$$$!! Now I just need to replace the old part of the fence and get a new deck!! It never stops LOL!

Happiness is a close, tight-knit family that stays in another state.

I did several of those types of trips, and have fond memories of them.

At some point, I traded my motorcycle in on a wife.

As this is the frugal living forum, guess which of those has higher upkeep costs.

I live in a state with great state parks and enjoy the occasional getaway there. It's an easy, short drive; a change of scenery; a really nice bed, tub, and balcony (none of which I have in my current home); it's in the woods; usually a pool, fireplace, or some other amenity; good food in the dining room; and great hiking trails. I take a book and some wine and don't use radio, TV, or device. With my employee discount, I get three days and two nights at a "destination" for well under $200 total. If I go with others and we share a cabin, it's even less. Granted, that's not visiting my relatives 1k miles away or enjoying the beach 800 miles away, both of which would cost thousands (and be worth it to me; I plan to do these, as well), but it's a break from the mundane, and I find it refreshes me.
