I'm sure he was referring to an enclosed arena, and I don't know that it's anything that's high on the list of needs for Winston. Minor league hockey isn't what it was a couple decades ago, and minor league basketball doesn't draw all that well. Unless Wake Forest decided to move their games to a downtown arena, I don't really see the case for it. I guess maybe a smaller-scale multi-use space could have its uses, but I don't know if the juice would be worth the squeeze if the city would be on the hook for funding it.
Since Wake Forest owns LJVM that move would not likely be happening in the near future, IMO.
I think it would be cool if there was enough land to build a mini arena, about 5,000 to 8,000 seats attached to the Benton Convention Center. It would be a great venue for hockey and events associated with the Benton Convention Center.
It would be nice to have, but I'm not sure it's needed. But what I can say is that I'm excited to have some hockey here in the Triad, even if I have to wait a year, and even if it's several levels below what I'm used to. I just moved from the Norfolk area where they had the Admirals, who just dropped from the AHL (similar to AAA in baseball) to the ECHL (similar to AA).
I and most people tend to think of arenas as domed stadiums, not open-air. Somehow, I don't think the baseball stadium is appropriate when it's 14 degrees and snow on the ground.
I think Winston-Salem would stand to benefit tremendously from new/updated convention and entertainment facilities downtown myself. The city would gain a lot more exposure if it had a more robust convention industry.

The Benton Convention Center is already doing this. It is under renovation or as their site states 'reinvention' to coincide with 'Innovation Quarter.
New meeting rooms as well as audiovisual upgrades. A new exterior and changes to the lower level are supposed to take place the first half of 2016.
A second phase on the upper level will take place from July 2016 through February 2017. A third phase from June 2016-April 2017 will include an addition on the south side and improvements to the entrance on Fifth Street

And can be easily configured for multiple styles of entertainment/ usage. Baseball fields are limited in how they can be modified and the time of year they can be used for other events. You wouldn't have a monster truck rally or dirt bike event during baseball season. The field would be a wreck.

Oh okay...all I read was that the city needed a downtown "sports and entertainment area". I wasn't sure what you meant. Are you talking about an arena - like the LJVM Coliseum? It's not downtown, but there isn't honestly a good spot for one downtown at this point...it would have to take out a lot of buildings.
The Winston-Salem Sports Complex (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winsto...Sports_Complex), surrounds the coliseum and also includes the fairgrounds, WF baseball and football stadiums, and the WF tennis complex. I guess that's the best the city can offer - seems like a pretty comprehensive complex.
