NCDOT should've left I-85 on it's original alignment through Greensboro and signed the entire loop as I-840 (I-73 & I-785 overlaps notwithstanding).
While I agree, I think it was part psychology what NCDOT did. They obviously didn't want cars heading to Charlotte to still use the old route when the southeastern part of the loop opened and even though the signs clearly say Charlotte, people (especially out of town/staters) would be like, but I must stay on I-85, since that goes to Charlotte, I don't want to take I-840.

I see your point. The whole idea was to route that traffic away from death valley. Its still pretty clogged during rush hour. Just think if all that I-85 loop traffic were still going through death valley today.

I like your term death valley, I call it the gauntlet and have seen two accidents personally there, both where someone got rear-ended (thankfully not me) right next to me. They need to re-engineer that section from exits 220 to 223, widen it, make it flow better, eliminate the left-hand exits or entances, and reduce the tight bends. It's like 3 miles of white knuckle hell.

Yep and they need to reconfigure the hwy 29 exit. Traffic backs up because everyone is trying to get off I-40 on to hwy 29 at the same time and what kills me is when cars try to cut in at the last second. I dont let them. I waited fair and square lol
The new section is up on Google Maps now! I'm actually surprised it was updated just one week after opening.
I would like to take some credit in sending in the update request to Google Maps the day it opened, but maybe there were multiple people who sent in requests that day as well!

Looks great! They had the I-73 extension off of Bryan Blvd updated very quickly as well. I think in most cases, they have the upgrade ready to go since they know what's under construction. It's just a matter of clicking the button for the update to go through.

Only problem is that Google jumped the gun and labeled it as I-840. That section is currently only signed as I-785. I-840 won't be signed on it until the rest of the loop is built.

Oh well, better earlier than never! That I-785 must be new as well, because yesterday when I looked at Google Maps, it was only labeled I-840.
Hey, in my defense, I just sent them a link to the press release in my update request, what they chose to label the road was their doing!
I'm sure next February when the next section (Bryan to Battleground) is updated on Google Maps it will probably be I-840 as well.
