The good one on E Elm St. in Athens no longer appears on Google Maps.

I checked probate this morning and no deed to Grace Lutheran has been filed as of yet. Its still assessed to Gibsons Barbeque of Huntsville.

WE HAVE 5 LOCATIONS TO PICK FROM IN NORTH ALABAMA

Whitt's Barbecue began in Athens, Alabama in 1966, and the Whitt family still owns and operates 5 original locations in the area. If you're looking for Whitts locations outside Alabama, click here.

While the restaurant now has locations across three states, it remains a family business for the Whitt's. Mark Whitt owns and operates the Decatur and East Lawrence locations; Faye Whitt and family operate the stores in Ardmore, Rogersville, Muscle Shoals and Fayetteville, Tenn.; and Joe Whitt, along with his family and sister Bonnie Whitt, own and operate the two locations in Athens.

I think I remember there being a Whitt's Barbecue in Huntsville a long time ago. Does anyone remember that? There was a discussion on Reddit...

Quote:
I had the founder of Whitts BBQ son as a teacher and he told us why. It was basically a gentlemans agreement that Whitts would stay out of Huntsville and the other BBQ joint would stay out of Decatur. I forget what the other joint is called, but it's one of the popular ones here. Years later, a single Whitts BBQ was built in Huntsville, and then it burned down. They took that as a sign of bad karma and never built another here.
Quote:
I have been told by a few residents that we did have one, but I am convinced they are mistaken and it was actually Nolens BBQ they are thinking of as there has been zero photographic evidence to support it.
Quote:
It was Whitts long before Nolen bbq took over. Pulaski pike and Winchester rd is where it was. There was also another location at sparkman and executive dr for a short time. Maybe 90s
Was Whitt's BBQ paid to stay out of Huntsville?

The building was still there as of February 2023. However, whether the restaurant is still open is another matter.
Update: I just called the Whitt's BBQ downtown Athens location. The Whitt's BBQ on Elm street is still in business. Note I called the downtown location because they are open on Monday but the Elm St. location is not.

There is no change on the Whitt's Barbecue (Alabama) website.

I remember the Whitt's in Huntsville, we ate there often. I believe it was on Sparkman Drive not far from UAH.

Thank you for researching that! Now for the next question - where is the pit for the Athens locations? I've never stopped, even though Elm Street is sometimes along my journey.

If that is the restaurant I remember there were two locations. One was on South Parkway and the other was on University Drive. I remember taking my family visiting from out of town to the one on University Drive.

I think I remember it being on the east side of Sparkman Drive just north of University Drive.
