Another vote for the original Whitt's in Athens. Consistently good.

Someone mentioned Dreamland...I've never had anything good out of there. I've given it four tries, each time something was wrong. Three times it was dry, dry, dry. Another time...cold.

I've liked Ol' Dads, but there have been times over the years when their health score has scared me.

I've also liked Camargo BBQ north in Lincoln County.

Moe's on Carl T. Jones is really good. Not only their pork/chicken/turkey, but their sides are fantastic.

I had some Whitts delivered back to me today, wife was in TN and picked me some up.

Sad part is all the TN locations don't have White sauce, so I have to get a LOT when I go locally.

I think for a place to even be considered as the "Best" BBQ they should have a pit. You know, build a fire on the side and shovel the coals under the meat. Places that actually make real BBQ are very far and few between. Lots of places with big factory SS smokers, but it ain't a pit.

Around here, Thomas is about the best for ribs, chicken, and white sauce.
The old Greenbriar is a solid second place. Don't fill up on hush puppies.
New Market has a good place.

As for buying a whole boston butt, next month when football season gets rolling, most of the local High Schools will be selling them at one time or another as a fund raiser. It's a roll of the dice, it's always good, but sometimes you get one that is really done right.

Sadly, Mr. Barbecue is no longer in business, at least in the Cook Ave. location. The building was demolished to make way for an expansion of the County Youth Detainment facility. As a substitute, I would offer Old Big Cove Barbecue. It is pretty good, for store-bought stuff. Being a cooker myself, I don't think you can beat the stuff you make at home. I also make my own sauce, which has been in the Family since 1920.

Google map it here: 34.743064,-86.597041 and from the look of the streetview, it's still open.

The easiest way to say where it is: Last building on the right, coming from the parkway, on Cook Ave, the road next to Krispy Kreme.

We have the ARCHIBALDS in Northport, AL. We have Dreamland in Northport, the ORIGINAL in Tuscaloosa. We have Jim and Nicks in Tuscaloosa. I'd say the best would be Archibalds, not a chain, just a little block building... it IS AWESOME!

I've been BBQing for 20+ years and I have yet to encounter commercial BBQ that I would prefer over what I can produce. However, I LOVE trying the various sauces across the country and I'll admit there are MANY sauces that I would choose over my own. Now, my dry rub seasoning - that's a different story .
I use a 1/4" steel Oklahoma Joe offset (the HEAVY original model from twenty years ago), Big Green Egg and a La Caja China for my BBQing.

I just looked up Archibalds, did they close?

Urbanspoon lists them as closed.

So, these places that don't smoke it on site, what do they do? Obviously bring it in, but from where?

Surely they aren't "Applebeesing" it. (Cooked elsewhere, frozen in bags, heated back up.)
