Numbers are out
https://www.al.com/news/2023/05/alab...ort-shows.html

The Rocket City added nearly 3,300 people from July 1, 2021 to July 1, 2022, according to new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. That’s about nine new people per day. Huntsville city is now home to roughly 222,000 people, and it’s the only city in Alabama with more than 200,000 residents, as the state’s three other large cities continue to shrink.

The actual number for the July 2022 Census Bureau estimates have been released:

Birmingham: 196,910
Huntsville: 221,933 (the city's own estimate is 227,000+)
Madison: 59,785
Mobile: 183,289
Montgomery: 196,986
Tuscaloosa: 110,682 (huge increase from the 2021 estimate. Students perhaps?)
Auburn: 80,006
Decatur: 57,922 (Madison is now larger than Decatur)

Man they tore Mobile apart, I refuse to believe that it is losing population quicker than Montgomery and Birmingham… well better get that annexation going

Think the Tuscaloosa number used before was the 2020 number,
The 2021 estimate was around 109,000.

As with all stats, the populations are being penciled in differently than reality, it should include metro areas vs just the city limits. Huntsville looks like a map of the lakes in Minnesota with all the sprawl and fingers stretching everywhere. Birmingham is apparently “small” geographically which is partly why gun violence seems skewed.

Just saying when trying to heap a city into a rack and stack and certain bin, it’s not what is always seems.

They will ;Metro populations come out later I think, this is just the cities . The distinction is usually well indicated

Metro populations already came out, but the realignment apparently doesn’t happen for another month

Yeah, you may be right. They could've just made a mistake in the 2021 estimate and essentially left it at the number of the actually 2020 census.

Metro numbers are reported by Census elsewhere. These are strictly within city limits.

Birmingham isn't small in area at 147 square miles. And its city limit boundaries are a bit squirelly as well: https://www.quora.com/Why-are-some-c...weirdly-shaped

And when those numbers come out, remember that the Birmingham metro contains 6 counties (was 7 before the last update) with over 5,000 square miles, about 1.1 M. Huntsville's metro is 2 counties with only 1400 square miles and 515K. The Huntsville metro is actually more densely populated than the B'ham metro.

It'll be interesting to see the new metro definitions when they're released, which may or may not be this year.

Urban Area is probably the most realistic number to use, and of course, that is available too.
