No its not. Lets use target as an example. A target cart pusher has to know about lot and vehicle safety, customer service, and has full access to the entire property including the back stock room. Of course target is going to do a full background check and drug test.
And because of all this is the reason I will se more and more crime stories because many can't get a job and have no choice but to turn to crime
Some people who have expressed interest in dishwashing jobs and some of the ads I have come across requires you to complete a online application??? I mean someone who has a interest in being a dishwasher probably wouldn't have a computer at home or computer experience so to fill out a online application is beyond nuts.
clerical or customer service I can see but a job that does not require the use of a computer?? Now I can see how someone can turn to illegal ways of making money because for a dishwasher job you should just be able to fax a resume. You definitely didn't see ads like this in 1999.
I am not surprised. Wasn't there a little uproar about McDonald's now demanding you have a bachelor's degree and several years of cashier experience to work for them nowadays? Things have changed drastically from when I was coming along looking for employment. Before you had to go, sit down, fill out the application, attach your resume if you had one, and then follow-up or wait for a call. Now when people want to apply to places that may or may not be hiring everything must be done online and that is if they have an application available. I went online to apply to Target and I couldn't even fill one out because it wouldn't upload because there were no open positions. You would think at least let me fill it out so you can have it on file to pull from

this turned out to be an error in the job posting, not a real requirement for a cashier position.
um, mcdonalds' has a corporate headquarters, not just restaurants. and actually i'd bet that you can work your way up to head manager without a degree.
A person who is desperate for work and is willing to wash dishes would not know how to use a computer.
Disagree. I know how to use a computer and have applied for housekeeping jobs as well as dish washing and laundry attendant jobs because I am beyond being picky and hold the belief that if you really want a job you will be open to doing whatever is available.

If you can look left and right, you can pretty much round up carts in a parking lot.
There is no reason to do a full background check for jobs like this. With cameras everywhere, if someone is stealing from the stockroom they will get caught.
JMO, unless someone is applying for a job that involves driving a bus, company vehicle, truck, etc or they're going to be operating heavy/dangerous machinery, I think drug testing is a bit much.
It certainly is to stock shelves and run a cash register.
I wonder how much money Target wastes on drug testing and background checks in regards to their turnover for these low level jobs. I guess it is passed on to the consumer.
