Can you just remove the old smoke detector and replace it with the Nest? Same wiring?

Buzz - Don't do it. The Nest is not for you. There is a really bad set of reviews all over the internet. And some are exactly the problem you do not wish to have. False alarms are the big deal...particularly in one that is hard to get at. They are also obnoxious enough they cannot be ignored.

There are also indication of installation problems with some electrical systems.

DON'T GO THERE.

I will send you a DM with a local electrician who will install a compatible and inexpensive smoke alarm for you.

For others interested the thermostat gets good reviews...but the smoke detector does not appear to be ready for prime time. Some are bad enough that a recall might be called for.

I have had three nests in my house - for three years now, ONE... one false alarm.

And yes, you can get the nest in 110v and just re-wire it (two wires)
to hush an alarm, open your app, and silence the alarm.
or push the center button....

Read the 1 star reviews on AMAZON. They apparently can't be shut off without removing the batteries. Apparently they used to have a feature where you could wave at them and shut it off...but that is gone.

Just too many bad reviews MacG...Might be OK for you but not for us older guys for whom climbing a ladder no longer works.

Paying $75 for a potential pain in the back does not turn me on.

Just out of curiosity, can you get the app on your iPad? I think I said before that we don't have a data plan on our phones. We have the AT&T Go Plan. $25 every three months and more minutes than we can use. But it's just call or text and we never call anyone except on the landline, or when I need to ask if I should bring home a Starbucks, and I'm driving (hands free blue tooth in the car).

Older Reviews of the unitr..

Reviews of the newer unit.

Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Nest Protect 2nd Gen Smoke + Carbon Monoxide Alarm, Battery

I would not go near it with a 10 foot pole.

The most interesting review last night was an electrical contractor from Silicon Valley whose long review has apparently vanished. Interesting.
