i myself got unlucky back in 2005 when i was not able to get in the h1b visa lottery and had to wait for another year--and another visa lottery--before i could get in the US to work. it's about time that the USCIS is being made accountable on how they do "lottery"

Did you read the comments attached to your link? The vast majority want H1-b visas eliminated and to stop the influx of foreign workers taking American jobs. If everyone knows about the current system, and how many foreign workers are hired, public anti-immigrant sentiment could put the whole system in jeopardy. Maybe it might be better to keep it secret.

It would be much better to have a legal immigration program geared towards accepting people with needed job skills, than to give out temporary visas which basically create an indentured servitude class with whom a privileged american worker can't fairly compete.

and why should this be kept secret? the tech industry has been abusing this h1b system, it needs to be audited to make things transparent. the tech industry has been getting the bulk of the approved h1bs, despite the supposed "lottery" system. doesn't that reek of something fishy?

and it's about time to that this system does not displace american citizens themselves out of jobs. i don't want more foreigners who don't even want to assimilate to come in here in the US and take the jobs out of the US citizens whose very hands the foreigners are feeding from. such a vicious cycle.

Sure, I'm all for paying kids to go get degrees American companies want. Or paying companies to train people.

There are two reasons why the tech industry gets more H1Bs:

1) There is higher demand for tech workers than other types. Few if any areas are growing faster than technology.

2) Fraud by "consulting" firms, such as Tata, Wipro, Cognizant and Infosys, that apply for tens of thousands of H1Bs so that they can get enough for their business plans. Since the odds of getting a H1B are 1/4, they will apply for four times the visas that they need. Every employee in India will have an application, and the lucky ones to be drawn in the lottery will go to the US. Rinse and repeat every year.

While the USA is busy lowering math standards to bring 'equality' to schools, US companies only succeed by raising needed math standards.

While the USA is getting more obese, thin foreign photo models are getting work permits.

While foreigners learn 2, 3 languages in their lifetime, US citizens struggle with grammar and spelling of their mother tongue.

While most US doctors have their student loans to pay, often graduate with so-so grades, specialize in something lucrative, and search the wealthy urban centers, foreign medical doctors will be tested much more rigorously, have a background in family medicine, and are first sent to poor rural areas of the US.

Efficiency, humility, and dedication is a hallmark of any imported workforce anywhere in the world. The USA was built on it and not on feelings of entitlement.

Yet I know H1B tech workers that can't speak much English or spell or communicate with anyone but other Indian H1B workers. Weird.

There is a need, but the system is broken right now.

IMO there is a simple solution to this -- instead of allocating visas according to a lottery, just allocate them according to the highest wage.
