How much should we allow?

These numbers are for legal immigrants only, not illegals (should be zero) or non immigrants like those on work visas etc.

No fixed number or ratio of any other number should be involved.

I don’t want social security or our economy to collapse, so we need to increase the numbers. Immigration rates have not been keeping up with our population growth. I put down 2 million because we have been flat at 1 million annually for 30 years now.

I wonder if the people who voted 0.1% of population realize that they voted for about 350,000 people, which is higher than the next option if 100,000. OP, did you realize that when you made the poll?

I wanted to separate the percentage option from the whole number selections. I did know that .1% was about 330,000 people. That option was added because it provides for a steady inflow balanced against our overall population at any given time.

Be careful about social security and economy worries. Many immigrants bring in their grandparents who are eligible for SSI even though they never worked a day in this country. That alone could sap social security. If you say let's bring in 2 million skilled people, I can tell you that those sort of immigrants do not have a lot of kids and we've then dug an even deeper hole for ourselves. As one of the planets most advanced economies, we need to be one of the first to figure out how to host a robust economy without population growth, because whether you like it or not, the world will stop growing pretty dam soon.

Unless you want to ban abortions worldwide and roll back women's rights to 1850.

As long as they can pay their own way and aren’t hellbent on destroying this country’s way of life, I would be ok with 10,000 annually.

The term I usually include in this sort of discussion is "stasis".

Not only not ever rising growth ... but an actual retrenchment of population levels.
Fewer people and all doing better for it.

I'm okay with at least 1% (3.2 million) so long as their immigration is skill-and-resource-based. In other words, I'd like to see them transfer at least 50K of funds into the USA and find employment in a field in need of people (nursing, engineering, etc).

I think the number does need to be tied to the unemployment rate. Currently the number should be zero, since unemployment is above 10%. When it is down in the 3-5% range, then more immigrants should be encouraged to come. Also, the skill-based visa awards should change their quotas based on the employment levels of people in those fields. If 10% of nurses are no longer finding employment in 2030, then skills/certifications in that field should no longer be considered on an application.

Also, the system shouldn't (in general) be first-come-first-served, but rather award LPR's to those with the highest skills in fields that are short on workers, and/or those who are bringing the most money/resources into the country (investor visas) with them.

We have no obligation to welcome everyone, just the people we need. We also shouldn't be shy about brain-draining or skimming off the wealth of the world while we still can.

No more than 100,000 per year. That comes close to matching the number of American citizens who become expats per year.

We don't have unlimited buildable land or potable water.

You may want to educate yourself a bit about US immigration.
