I don't know where this packed market was, but the farmer's market I go to (Laguna Hills) is not packed at all. People are at least as far apart from each other as they are in a supermarket, and they are out in the fresh open air. Last week, most everyone was wearing a mask.

If they close the farmer's market, they should certainly close all the grocery stores as well, because I guarantee you indoors locations are germier. I'm not worried one bit when I am at the farmer's market. I assume you wash your produce when you get home either way.

I have a friend who is pretty sure he is positive for COVID 19 (his wife is an ER doc), but he hasn't been tested and is on the upswing of getting better after several brutal days. I don't think he is alone in being not counted.

# of Deaths is the metric I am keeping track of. Impressed that San Francisco, a city with one of the very first mortality, only has 9 deaths today.

Nearly three weeks after ordering Californians to stay home, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday that the state’s efforts are slowing the spread of the novel coronavirus and “bending the curve.”

“Let me give you a sense of optimism, in terms of the curve in California bending: It is bending, but it’s also stretching,” Newsom said at a news conference.

Bending the curve means reducing the transmission of the virus to prevent a sudden and large spike of patients with COVID-19. Instead of a rapid surge, infections grow more gradually, essentially “stretching” out a bell curve over time, as Newsom said, to avoid overwhelming the healthcare system with more seriously sick patients than resources to treat them.

The governor expects tougher days ahead and a peak of sick patients in May.

Newsom is working with hospitals, healthcare providers and manufacturers to procure and staff 50,000 new hospital beds — in addition to the more than 70,000 currently in the state’s healthcare system — to adequately care for the anticipated rise in patients.

Maybe because it was outside of the City of LA's limits and another Mayor has his say on the matter? I went past Culver City's Farmer's Market and police were present as they kept the same distancing as inside a market that a news helicopter camera can't penetrate

Flattening the curve by definition means that social distancing measures stay in place for a long time. To flatten it for only a little while just means that a huge number of cases will occur later in the year, and we'll still have the same problems we would have had if we didn't social distance when we did.

In the beginning, the number of infected people was doubling every three or four days. Now L.A. County has 7,559 known cases and the doubling rate has slowed down to every six days. This may not sound like a big difference, but when you're talking about exponential growth every added day is a bonus.

If we lift the social distancing rules and life gets back to "normal", the numbers will shoot up again in no time, and we'll be looking at a large number of cases within two or three weeks. The idea is to keep a lid on the virus's ability to spread from person to person until a vaccine or treatment is found (and that means lots of clinical trials and testing, which takes a year or more).

There has to be some kind of compromise found which lets the number increase gradually, but I'm pretty sure that any events with large numbers (think stadium sports or concerts) won't come back until we have a vaccine. Also, routine testing needs to be available so local and state governments know when they have to clamp down again. This will be with us for a while; we need to get used to it.
