It always looked pretty cool to me:

I could do without the gangs and homeless, though.

I love living in Los Angeles. I love living in large cities. I'm not a suburban person and certainly not a rural person. I love a city with great cultural amenities, great food, great shopping, close to the ocean, great natural beauty. Love all the professional sports teams. And LA's Mediterranean climate just can't be beat imho. I love the fact that it's improving and expanding its public transportation system. The most important thing is living close to where you work so you have time to enjoy everything this place has to offer.
Can't imagine living anywhere else.

Dont mind all the pretentiousness of living in such a city? i lived in NYC for a decade and grew so soo tired of phony, pretentious people. Goes hand in hand in such cities, IMO.

I've always wondered the same thing... "What on earth is so appealing about LA??"

These people are living in an area where it is predicted that one day a monstrous earthquake could take out the whole shebang.

https://www.earthquakeauthority.com/...ction-and-risk

USGS has estimated that there is a Los Angeles earthquake probability of a 75% likelihood of one or more magnitude 7.5 or greater quakes striking in the next thirty years, as of 2014.

Why would someone want to live on the edge like that? IMO, it's like 12,534,000 people all playing Russian Roulette.

Climate

I moved to LA in the mid 90s after college and spent five years there. I lived near the beach so I could be at the beach in the morning, go to work, then be snowboarding by 5 PM (75 minutes away at Mountain High) for the night session.

That and I was involved in the music and comedy scenes...tons of opportunities.

That said, LA is what I wanted when I was in my 20s. Would I live there again (or Baltimore, for that matter), no way. I love small town living too much. Glad I experienced the big cities when I did...I have great memories.

Oh geez. About a billion people around the world live in places which are prone to earthquakes. How about Japan? Turkey? Mexico? Italy? Indonesia? How about San Francisco? They've had worse quakes than LA. How about SEATTLE, now that's a disaster waiting to happen. But for some reason only LA gets called out.

We do our best to prepare and consider it worth the risk, that's all there is to it.

I moved to Los Angeles in 1970, and back then the usgs was stating the "big one" would happen sometime with in 30 years.
That was 54 years ago.

I don't think any one can predict when the "big one" will hapen.

Fabulous weather

Beach access

Bountiful amenities

Lots to do

Nightlife for younger crowds

It is just a matter of, if the cons are worth the pros to you personally. There weren't too many disadvantages in the 1970s. Today, the disadvantages are significant and are flat out deal-breakers for many of us.
