that is alot of medication. How are you doing?.
There is a good book by Joseph Glenmullen, M.D.- you may want to find it at the library. It is about depression and ways of coping.

What is amazing is that despite psychiatry and counselors being prevalent since the 1950's- no one has any real answers. It is a very complex problem.

I've been taking Prozac for a few years now but for an unusual reason. I've had Meniere's Disease for about 13 years which is a serious illness of the inner ear. After suffering very severe attacks of vertigo which would last for hours I heard that Prozac could be effective for the situational anxiety which can bring on an attack as well as making it easier to cope with the illness. It worked extremely well and I haven't had an attack for years now. It was so bad for awhile that it looked like I was going to go deaf and not even be able to work so I had some very difficult times. I had three surgeries and started taking Prozac and it gave me back my life so I'm certainly glad it was available.

I have heard good things about Effexor and Risperdal. May have to ask my doctor about this. Sometimes meds help take the edge off- which is important.

My dad takes anti depressants. There's very little difference in his mood I think. I really only think they should be used if you're being counseled though. You need the monitoring so you don't quit, etc. My dad has done this a few times it's difficult for everyone around him.

I was almost put on some last year. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about myself taking them.

anti depressants certainly help many people. 9 years I was put on 10mg of Paxil a day (a low dosage) In any case I was A short time later diagnosed with Generalized anxiety disorder- not depression. My new MD. put me on 30MG buspar a day- This was 7 years ago- and these meds are appropriate for me- and I feel much better! The SSRI's (Zoloft, Paxil etc) are very affective at relieving depression and also anxiety, but have much more in the way of side effects. Buspar (Buspirone-the generic) has no side affects for me- the first month I did suffer dizzy spells, light head and at times an upset stomach- but after 4-5 weeks this was completely gone.. The meds have really helped me- and I feel much better. Depression, anxiety, panic attacks -all forms of mental illness are no joke.

All anti depressants have some sort of 'sides'- but are very helpful. Make sure you get the right diagnoses- and the right medication. One may have to try several before the best one is found.

If it helps- good for you. Counseling IMO is a waste-also my insurance does not cover it. I am not paying 200.00 for a 45 minute session. I will have to just wing it- the glories of American healthcare insurance .

Counseling will not help a chemical imbalance Sunny- with my new health cares high deductible- I cannot afford it now. However last fall I did see a clinical psychologist when the co pay was $20 per session- and he did clear many things up.

Meds and therapy are helpful- but now the meds alone help me. I have a friend who is in 12 step- AA- and in therapy- his MD wanted to put him on effexor- he refused- but it was ok in his mind to self medicate with the booze.

As for the American health care system- well you know my feelings about that subject!
