what does everyone think. Some actually swear by them- other refuse to take any.
Sometimes it seems therapists use medication as a placebo- it is a multi-billion dollar industry in America. What is everyone's experience- good or bad?
For some its a god send. For others a nightmare. One doctor suggested i take them for severe PMS.After a month of *feeling* numb, no emotions and feeling disconnected i got rid of them. My treadmill fixed me!!!
My daughter was put on them at 17 for anxiety and a mood disorder. It made her moodier and more out of control that i care to remember.I feel some doctors just think that it is the cure all for everybody, write a prescripton and send you home with their latest sample and away you go. I realize some people desperatly do need it and it's saved their life but for some, they are to quick to hand it out and shut you up.
I think antidepressants should only be prescribed by a psychiatrist, and not by general practitioners who are probably just trying to push whatever the last drug rep delivered.
I think antidepressants can be lifesavers to the severly mentally ill.
I think for most people, antidepressants are generally a short term solution at best. Proper mental health counseling is the best solution for dealing with a major stressor and/or learning new coping strategies to deal with negative thoughts and feelings.
I had a job once that was so stressful, my doctor prescribed an anti-depressant for me just so I could face going to work every day. Pretty quick after that happened I polished up my resume and found a new job.
My doctor put me on prozac when I was dealing with my Mom's alzheimer's. I was highly stressed and started getting panic attacks. After she died, my doctor slowly took me off of them. Since the menopause has started, i'm on it again but at a much lower dose. They are helpful in some cases. It's when they start putting children on the stuff that I have issues.

Counseling can help BUT its never covered by insurance. The cost is prohibitive. Sometimes 200.00 for an hour- I needed a marriage counselor but refuse to pay 600-800 a month. Its just too high.

Right, and why pay 200 bucks an hour to scream at each other in front of someone, when you can do it at home for free?

Yes- there really is no solution. In the US, health insurers refuse to pay for counselors, but its ok to see a pill-pusher/psychiatrist once every 8 weeks or so- (according to the FDA) as it is approved. It is a vicious cycle with no answer.
One 5-HTP (50 mg capsule) taken with B6 (don't have it in front of me right now - - whatever the standard tablet dosage is) up to three times per day (best with something small on your stomach - even a slice of bread) will really make a difference. I have used it from time to time and really benefited from the results. Nearly instant results (you can feel it "loading" into your system). No jitters, no hyperactivity, no "high", no after-effects; however, always take with some light food to protect your stomach. Also, me and the person who recommended it noticed that taking it with some caffeine (that can include chocolate) seemed to get it into the system quicker as well. You will notice a big difference. It increases serotonin production.
