OK, understood a lot, but what's an LOP and a DFT? Not a snipe. An ET and I missed a bit in there. Yes, I know MMOW, EOOW, jacking gear, SSTG, governor, but I work on power plnat equipment now. Wait I know - Lube Oil Pump. What's a DFT?
MICoastieMom, the short answer about a General Discharge is that, while it is not a punitive discharge like the Dishonorable discharge is, it means that the military member was discharged from the service for any number of reasons that prevented them from completing a term of successful service. Some may be related to medical conditions or other factors that are beyond the member's control. Some may be in lieu of a punitive discharge. As far as the term "vet" I've always assumed it means someone who served long enough to receive Veteran's Benefits from the VA. And that can be as little as 180 days. I really should do some more research to come up with a better answer for you, though. (And there's other things to say about "General" discharges, but I need to get to bed now.)

Deairating feed tank (been 30 years, don't remember how to spell it) and some plants have DFTs that will quench in a heartbeat and cause loss of feed. Anyway, that's what it is even if i didn't spell it right, but like i said, it's been 30 yrs. now.
One thing I've learned is that you'll find more "Vets" when traveling by bus than you'd ever imagine. I still remember way back (8 years is a long time for a young 26 year old like me), I was going to my first duty station at Ft Benning. At the time I didn't know all the rules about traveling in uniform, so I was in my Class A's. Figured since I had to go from BCT to AIt in A's I was supposed to do the same to my unit. Silly me, lol.
Any way, had a guy sat next to me for 16 hours telling me how he was picked for Delta Force when he was in & this & that. How he was the only one that didn't get booted out of the selection process for something or other. I could tell he was enjoying his own story so I just nodded in agreement & tried to sleep. I just didn't really feel like bursting his bubble at the time.
I'm a Navy Vet and know/say all the "lingo" that was back then. I never have a problem talking with Navy Vet's because......."been there done that"! Never came across a "fake Veteran" though. Did come across some "fake cowboys" in nightclubs while I was involved in professional rodeo. But, that is another Thread.
While in the Navy, (1965-1967 ) I ran across a sailor at the air station who would tell fake family stories to get sympathy.
He stated his mom was praying daily for his safety cuz she had already had 4 of her sons ( the sailor's brothers) killed as Marines at different times in Vietnam.
I overheard him telling that story and asked for his mom's address as I wanted to send a sympathy card and a few bucks to her.
He, looked puzzled, his face turned red, and he quickly walked away and never tild that tale again.
Need help, please. looking all night for way of smacking proof in a guy claiming to have been a "Marine Assasin". I've had it with this friggin Assclown and I need to be able to just destroy his claims of so much over the top lying I have ever heard. I have never served and I know this guy is so far out there I can't believe theneighbors actually buy this crap. he's a new neighbor about 2 weeks ago, came over for a beer after I met him walking down the block and seemed like a pretty cool guy until I showed him a few of my guns. I have a calico M-950, has a spiral drum that sits on top of the frameand drops shells from the bottom. and a AR the shoots 9mm uses glock 30 round clips. he istantly picks up the calico after I lay it down and starts telling me how this was his backup weapon and how he had the backpack holster thing for it, but then picks up the glock clips and tries to cram them into the hollow grip and then into the ejction port. I immediately remove the gufrom his hand and tell him he better not play with things he doesn't know anything about. he starts getting loud with me in my own home while I'm holding (unloaded) firearms. I tell him he's full af it and show him the door quickly. well now he's bending all the neighbors ears telling them about how he used the callico M950 (hmm funny he didn't even knwo WTF it was until I told him) to hunt druglords andso many other lies it's truly unbelievable stories that make ME want to pound his face in. SOOO I NEED AWAY TO ABSOLUTELY OUT THIS JERK OFF PLEASE.....

ask him who chesty puller is (only the closest thing to deity in the usmc).
ask him if he ever knew any marines that got in trouble for going AWOL (marines go UA, army goes AWOL; means Unauthorized Absence).
ask him if any of the marine medics in his unit were chicks (marines don't have medics, and even if they did, girls wouldn't deploy with his supposed 'assassin' infantry unit).
ask him if he ever goes out to eat in his cammies (marines can't wear their cammies off of base unless they are deployed).
ask him what rifle qualification he was (from least to greatest: marksman (pizza box), sharpshooter (iron cross), or expert (crossed rifles)).
ask him if he went to boot camp in arizona or jersey (marine corps boot camps are located in san diego and paris island).
ask him if his drill sergeants ever called him 'maggot' in boot camp (marines have drill instructors, not drill sergeants).
first though, before you ask him any of these things, make sure that you read up on them a bit, so that you can fully appreciate his blundering lies when he gives em.

I don't think that you are out of line. I'm an honest vet, I tell the truth when I'm asked about it or I talk about my time in, but then I can prove it. I hate to lie or stretch the truth because I have to answer to that and I have better things to do with my time than to try and explain something.
You call him on it...you deserve to hear and know that the man is speaking the truth.
When I was in the Army, I was fortunate enough to be assigned to the 25th Infantry division (Tropic Lightning), Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. I had fell in love with the Aloha state when as a young boy, I saw the movie, "Blue Hawaii". I thought that was the most beautiful place and even back then, I longed to go to that "paradise". Twenty two years later, my dream came true. My years (1982-1985) in Hawaii were richly rewarding.
I had to volunteer for the assignment to Hawaii. I was placed on a waiting list, and two long years later was reassigned from Alabama to Hawaii (the Lord was teaching me the value of patience even back then). After I received my orders, I was excited (and my family was, too!) about my new mission with the 25th.
The Tropic Lightning Division had a storied history and was well known for the many heroes who had "Done the Division Proud". I want to state here, that throughout my Army career, I was blessed to be assigned with some of the best men and women who wore the uniform. The 25th was no different-it was well stocked with outstanding soldiers.
Part of my responsibilities as Chief, Personnel Actions Branch, 25th Adjutant General Company, was to process retirement applications. One day, my dedicated senior non-commissioned officer, Sergeant First Class Alex Silva, brought me a retirement application for a well known Sergeant (SGT). I'll call him SGT Doe.
This soldier was reportedly the most decorated (for heroism) enlisted man we had assigned to the 25th at that time. High ranking officers had often pointed out his deeds as an example for others to emulate. SGT Doe was prior service (Korea and other places), had reached the rank of Master Sergeant, and was honorably discharged before reaching retirement eligibility. He had reenlisted to gain the 20 years active duty service required to retire. His military personnel records jacket (DA 201 file as we called it) reflected all his service data pretty accurately. Although his 201 file looked genuine and SGT Doe had been performing his duties in an outstanding manner, something contained within the 201 struck me as a little unusual. I had learned over my years of military personnel work, that these little suspicions proved out to be right. I've seen some soldiers fake educational qualifications, awards, promotions, test results, and various other items. My earlier training as a Personnel Records Specialist helped me to quickly detect inconsistencies within a 201 file.
As I thoroughly searched SGT Doe's 201, several small items raised red flags. This man supposedly had been awarded a Silver Star (SS) and many other medals too numerous to list. This SS medal did not look right to me...the documentation was suspicious.
I forwarded SGT Doe's retirement request to the Department of the Army Military Personnel Center located in Alexandria, Virginia. I knew the grizzled up old Chief Warrant Officer Four who was in charge of the Army Awards Department. I called him, told him SGT Doe's application was coming to him, and I asked him to carefully look at the Silver Star award.
About three weeks later, Chief Smith (I'll call him), called me and said that he had found out something very interesting about SGT Doe - he had received a Dishonorable Discharge from the Army in the early 1950's. This man was not a part of the Army...all his personnel records had been almost expertly falsified! SGT Doe was an imposter and had been found out by an expert! This "highly decorated" imposter was a slap in the face to the true soldiers who valiantly served with the 25th Infantry Division. I was glad the truth came out, and he was exposed as a false soldier.
Several years after this incident, I heard a story about a veteran who lived in a small town in the Midwest. This veteran was supposedly the most highly decorated man that city had ever produced. He was "top dog" and took the limelight at every ceremony honoring veterans. Well, some old wise World War II veterans (I have the utmost respect and gratitude for this group of veterans-I thank and salute them for the sacrifices they made to defeat the evil of that time) became suspicious and started to do some checking on this man. He too, was impersonating a true hero. He had never been in any type of military service!
