Sandpoint, ID was discovered several years ago by out-of-state buyers. Many moved there fulltime, but probably more moved there part time. A super quick google look at vacation rental homes lists 179 properties for rent. I think OP was trying to get away from those types of homes and the people that visit for a short time.

Just an off the wall comment from a neighbor who has traveled to Montana, Idaho and Wyoming quite a bit with dogs.

Remember these locales have moose, wolves and grizzly bear and I have a husky and know how they are when off leash.

Lake Tahoe is unique with a lack of really aggressive wildlife, yes I know all the black bear and mountain lion, but they run away from dogs for the most part.

Also, the Sierra is unique for so much access, but limited vehicle access and limited private property. Idaho and Montana have a ton of private property with no access. Wyoming had ATV's buzzing all over the Bighorns, and the Black Hills are just hills compared to the Sierra and fairly developed as well. We are used to so much public land and that is limited in many of these other locales or have lots of rules attached to forest areas we are not used to.

I have run into quite a few people who were long term Tahoe residents that have moved down into Northern Nevada valleys, you still have access to Tahoe and all the BLM around here and there are million dollar homes in the trees at the base of the Sierra here...if your not averse to living in California..lots of beautiful foothill areas in the Sierra....also Utah above Salt Lake in the mountains....

We have the chill vibe here your used to as well, although I’m noticing more uptight folks moving in

I am absolutely in love with Red Lodge, MT. I am not moving anywhere but wow, what a nice place it is, IMO.
