I've played trumpet, but I'm more partial to saxophonists. Dave Koz, Charlie Parker, David Sanborn, Joshua Redman...

I listen to a lot of astral jazz and groovy funk jazz stuff. Can't say I get into the more abstract stuff.

I bought the complete ******* Brew Sessions and haven't listened to them yet.

Too dark and disorienting for me so far.

YouTube - Fats Waller - My Very Good Friend The Milkman
Love this guy though...everything he does makes me smile.

I love, but cannot find, his rendition of "Hallelujah I'm a Bum!"

I like a good deal of jazz. As the OP is a pianist here's the following.

YouTube - Oleo - Phineas Newborn.mov - I kind of like watching him more than I liked the CD I got of him.

YouTube - Taylor Eigsti - I Love You - A young, but fairly noted, pianist.

YouTube - Jutta Hipp / Take me in your arms - A German pianist who abandoned music for her first love, painting.

In no particular order of preference---though you may care to note that these jazzmen never forgot the blues:

Duke Ellington
Wes Montgomery
Count Basie
Miles Davis
The John Coltrane who recorded for Atlantic
Sonny Rollins
Dizzy Gillespie
Benny Goodman
Stan Getz
Grant Green
Les Paul (don't laugh---the man was a remarkable guitarist in his own right as well as a great inventor and electronics tinkerer; there were reasons why he was always invited to swap lines with the big boys at the 1940s Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts)
Jimmy Smith
Dave Brubeck
The Modern Jazz Quartet
Jimmy Giuffre
Thelonious Monk
Charles Mingus
Horace Silver
Art Blakey
Jack Teagarden
Lester Young

. . . to name just a few . . .

(I'm a blues guitarist but I listened to certain horn and keyboard players as much as I listened to guitarists . . . )
