I agree about Marcus Roberts. In addition to having just plain outstanding talent, he probably captures the style and essence of Duke Ellington's piano playing better than anyone alive today. Though I haven't found a clip of it anywhere on YouTube, etc., Roberts' version of Ellington's "Single Petal of a Rose" is magical. Duke would be proud.
Jazz is always A GOOD THING here Black Jack!! Played a little Astrud Gilberto a while ago, in fact. Samba jazz plus 70 degrees outside plus a little Tecati equals YES!!!!!
I'm a big fan of contemporary (or smooth) jazz. I'm a big fan of Najee, Mindi Abair, Sade, Nelson Rangell, Rick Braun, Nick Colionne, Brenda Russell, and Brian Culbertson.
Blech. To each their own and I'm no purist, but IMO a lot of "smooth jazz" is glorified muzak and I'm none too sure about the glorified part.
However I'm happily surprised that the Monk/Coltrane groupies apparently haven't found their way to this thread yet. Great musicians of course, but often discussions of jazz are clogged w/these shills who act like those two are 800 zillion times better than anyone else who ever lived.

I am big fan of Sonny Rollins, you got to give this guy credit for leaving the scene twice in his carrer to re-invent himself or what ever, I think thats a lesson we all need. sometimes stopping and stepping back, IS progess, But for him to grow up in Harlem when he did and see bebop materialize out of the depression and the decline of big Band gave him a unique perspective. I know what you mean about Smooth Jazz, Most of these players are Berkely or GTI, or college Jazz players (unfortunately thats the era we are in now) The old Guard or people born around 1920-1930 ish, Left high school to become side men with the greats of the era

Nice, yo come up to Jersey and we will jam. Me and my dad are both musicians, im a drummer and he is a jazz ..everything..otherwise its all about Thelonious monk, Jaco Pastorius and Weather Report, Pat Metheny, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and the heavyweights Return to Forever
