Hey there BlackJ! I love jazz, and also am a decent jazz saxophone player (or was). I haven't picked up my horn in almost 8 years but I'm having my parents ship it all the way up to Alaska next week. I started playing sax my junior year in high school and by my senior year, I was playing with the highly acclaimed St. Olaf College jazz bands, doing improv and songs like C-Jam Blues, etc. I am eager to pick it up again.
During that time, I fell in love with Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Dizzy Gillespie, big band stuff, and Stan Getz, as well as others. I like more harmonic jazz. I have never been able to get into Coltrane or some of the other cool, "all over the place" artists. I like it swingy, hot, and melodic.
Very nice. You make me proud that you have played jazz!
Pretty good group of folks there Burdell. I'm a fan of jazz guitar. How about some of these folks; Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt, Luis Bonfa', Pat Metheny, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, Gabor Szabo, George Van Eps, Eric Gale, Joe Beck, Tal Farlowe, Johnny Smith, and Les Paul- 90 something and still going strong. Speaking of Eric Gale; some of my music friends get him confused with Eric Gales, a blues guitarist. Eric Gale was a session guitarist for a long time, notably with Creed Taylor's label CTI Records. His LP, Forecast, from 1973 is a GREAT lp! He passed in the mid 90's I believe.
Gabor Szabo! He's on Chico Hamiltons' "The Dealer" album
I have the Complete Roost Recordings of Johnny Smith and The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings of Chico Hamilton on Mosaic Records. Mosaic has some really great box sets of Jazz and Blues artists that would take a while to accumulate piecemeal, with extensive notes on recording sessions.
I like listened to Hancock, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, new comers like Jason Moran and Robert Glasper, Joe Sample, Oscar Peterson ect.
Check out Marcus Roberts. Dude is lightning.
