As I remember The Sea Diamond belonged the Ol Man Barthalimu he was murdered I think on New Years Day in the 1963 or 64, but not on the SeaDiamond but in his house by being stabbed by an angry family member or housekeeper. The all brick home sat for several years and as I remember I belive Benny Hanna bought the property and built a nice home with his traditional blue tile roof.

It was great. Moved there as a kid in 1961 (14) and loved it. It is nothing like it was.

I just ate at the Crab Cooker. Indeed, it is there. (I loved the cole slaw with my fish and rice.) Next to it is a huge mixed development complex coming. It is such a pain to park there.

I remember about 15 years back an old co-worker told me his grandma bought a house on 18th and seashore for 50k, worth about 2.5 mil now. Those most of been the days.

That was their summer cottage, they lived in hills of OC.

Try the one in Tustin, right off the 55 fwy, pretty much same food but much easier shopping center parking. Maybe a little nod to the original for character and food. When I go to original it is always off the beach season, usually on a cold cloudy winter day..

My grandmother lived on Lido island when I was a kid/teenager (lot purchased in 1940s) . I remember swimming at the beach club. Definitely remember Richard's market and Wil Wrights was always special treat- Went to Crab Cooker back then, Delaneys was another local favorite. Wasn't there a toy store across street from Richards? I always thought the Stuft Shirt looked interesting, but it never interested my grandmother. She loved both South Coast Plaza and Fashion Island and was in them soon after they opened. I thought the Pacific Life bldg. was cool when it was built, and still do...

Could often hear the foghorns from her house and even the surf if it was really big.

On the island there is a sidewalk system that was independent of the streets (grid between the homes)-stradas they were called at the time. Fun to explore, as kid I walked probably almost all of it. Back in the day there were impressive luxury homes, but also smaller simpler beach style homes on many small lots.

Great memories.

Default Pilgrm of newport beach

Yeah, I remember The Pilgrm;--- I watched it being built in Dennis Hollands "Front Yard" in the county area of Newport/Costa Mesa. He, and his family lived in the boat while he built it..
I also remember Linda Island when it was just a sand spit.. Used to pull the boat up on shore there, and have lunch while sailing.
Anyone remember "Orange Fishing Hole" where Balboa Bay Club is located now?
Or "Christians Hut" where the Condos are now? (Just down from the ferry)
Or, "The Castaways" up on the hill?
I miss seeing "The China House" when going out the jetty..
And Ralph Larabee's "Goodwill" anchored in the turning basin.....
Howards restaurant on PCH....Now a Pho place.
And HASSANS, with the authentic Blonde, Blue eyed Belly Dancers.??
Don't forget The Showboat restaurant, along with the Stuft Shirt (later Canos) on the bay.

Jack

Lido Toys
Bidwell's Mens Store
newcomer Security Pacific Bank
Atlantic Richfield station on the corner of Balboa Boulevard
The Cannery when it still was one
St. James Day School
Balboa Savings and Loan
The Blue Dolphin Restaurant

Other Memories

Rendezvous Ballroom
the Portuguese Dory Fleet
your first frozen banana at the Fun Zone
Prison of Socrates (maybe not ''til the 60s)
swimming across the bay
Flight of the Snowbirds
Shark Island
the Hurley Bell Restaurant in Corona Del Mar before it became the Five Crowns
there was no Newport Dunes, it was the Back Bay
when Huntington Beach was also known as Tin Can Beach

Anyone want to add anything else?

Can't understand why my wife says I have constant nostalgia, can you?
Funny we actually do have REALLY old 1920-1040s pics of Newport before there were even houses. The pics are really long (like 40 inch wide and 12 tall set n cardboard stock. And I can't scan it and trying to take a pic is impossible because I have to sit s far back and lose all resolution or I would.
We have some negatives so old they are actually on glass. Looks like a negative film but instead of the plastic it's on glass. I'm not a photography guy so I don't know the terminology.
