I made this over the weekend (used your husband's recipe, lubby) and it was great. The recipe I've used in the past for corned beef and cabbage is one that requires simmering on the stove so with this one, it was nice not to have to watch it. The only change I'd make the next time I cook it is to add mustard, as your recipe suggested.

I did mine in the crock pot for the first time this year...good and easy.
I used a very simple recipe...whole chopped onion, handful of baby carrots, five quartered red potatoes in bottom of pot...add three cups of water...add brisket with seasonings (I used pre-spiced, and added bay leaf and more peppercorns)...pour a bottle of beer over meat (used Harp lager). Cook for 8 hours, adding half a head of coarsely chopped cabbage in last 30 min.
since we don't use the pickiling spice what else can we flavor the corned beef with besides beer? I am using potatoes, onions, cabbage and maybe some carrots.
The corned beef went on about 7am and the potatoes right after church. Now I will add onions and carrots but not the cabbage til later. I do not cook it on high, I use the med or low control. We are having a fruit salad with it. Our company will be here about 5;30 and we plan on eating about 6:30. Of course at 5pm the March Madness picks will be announced. We do nothing during that time except watch TV.
I have my corned beef cabbage, onions and potatoes in the crock pot with a bottle of sam adam's beer, some bay leaf and water.
I made a version of crock pot corned beef and cabbage over the weekend and should have made your husband's recipe (#2), as I did last year, lubby. I tried a different one and since I happened to have only Corona beer on hand, I used that, when I should've used a dark beer. Also, the recipe I used asked for 3 cups of water, and it was too dilluted. Still a good dish, but not as good as the recipe you posted at the beginning of this thread....which I will now print out!
