I lived in Lynchburg 2004-2006.

I was reluctant to accept the job offer once I had visited Lynchburg because it looked like a dull hick town.

My employer sold me Lynchburg listing similar stuff as one of the above posters. After 2,5 years I had to move on. Living in Lynchburg is just not my cup of tea, too much religion, too much rednecks, too many parts of the town looks dingy and shabby.

I am in my 30's with a wife and a daughter. Most guys my age in Lynchburg are either die hard church goers or huntersmonster truck type of guys. Sure I could drive to Charlottesville to see a cool band, but alone I even offered to PAY for co-workers tickets but they rather stay at home and trash talk their neighborcousin etc, etc.

With the large employers that the town actually has, it is mysterious that the town lacks so much.

Aren't there a number of colleges around Lynchburg? Is there an intellectual community at all-- professors, students, cafes?

Also, what does it cost to get a nice 4-bedroom house in an interesting historic neighborhood?

Houses are very affordable in Lynchburg. Anywhere from $200-500K buys you a great house in lovely areas. Check out Rivermont and Peakland.

Randolph College, Lynchburg College, Sweet Briar (a few miles north in adjoining Amherst County), Liberty -- all have a positive influence on the city.

One of the main employers is moving their Corp HQ out, wisdom finally bit them in the can. The other has been itching to get out for some time, but temporarily restrained by the costs of doing so.

If you don't have ties in this area i really fail to see why people would WANT to move here, because it is a dead end street!!

Houston-nomad,

If you use the search thread, you'll find lots of information about Lynchburg. Thejoe and I are on opposite opinion sides regarding the city. There's no point in getting into another debate of the pros and cons.

I hope you find the information you need and, please, visit the city for more than a couple hours to decide whether it will work for you.

It is definitely not the perfect place for everyone. Good luck.

Thanks LL. Given how liberal I am in my thinking and politics, visiting to make sure we'll fit in is certainly a must. I live in a red state now, but most of central Houston is quite liberal, very diverse, and full of all the stuff to do that some people find lacking in Lynchburg. But we don't have any natural beauty here, and I miss that. So maybe it could be a fair trade. Thanks for the advice!

I'll jump in here before Thejoe gets back!

Lynchburg will never be know as "liberal". There are neighborhoods near Rivermont and Peakland that will be "more" liberal but still very traditional. It's no secret that Liberty University plays a large role in city politics. You may find it too "provincial" for your tastes. I don't remember if you said you already had a job offer. If you're not specifically relocating for a job offer, you might want to look at Charlottesville. Good luck.

Yes, they are moving all of about 50 people out. Boeing did the same thing moving the HQ from Seattle (not a bad town in anyone's book) to Chicago. There are many reasons to do that and the main one is access to a major airport. Actually it is very unique for a small city the size of Lynchburg to even have any major corporate HQs there. The fact that B & W moved 50 people out was much more about airports than anything else. Not much L can do about that. It's not Charlotte which is a major air hub.

Roanoke didn't give us the 'wow' factor as Staunton did, but there were nice areas and restaurants.
We are approaching retirement age and would like to find an area that we could afford. We expect to work part-time or try a home business(iffy, at best). My husband is a locksmith and I a Computer Programmer/Analyst for State of NH Environmental Services.

We are looking for a town that has interesting restaurants, theater, arts in general, historic areas, beautiful scenery , places to walk or bike and decent public transportation to get to these places and downtown jobs.
Also, good medical facilities.

To get to my point.. I have been looking online at various sites on Lynchburg and am impressed enough to plan a visit this Summer, because it appears to have all of the above amenities.
Can anyone tell me where I could find descriptions on the various neighborhoods?
We would like homes on tree-lined streets that have sidewalks. Walking distance to public transportation would be a plus.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
Have you checked out Lexington? Very historical and beautiful
