I think it has more to do with a culture of obedience expected by parents. A parent says, "You will learn to be a musician," because of the close links between music and mathematics, for example. Or the links between high-level abstract and analytical skills needed in chess. They expect their children to do something BESIDES school -- and they don't mean football, lol -- encourage the kid to pursue it, and the kid does. Because you do as you're told.

What in many Asian and South Asian cultures is called "discipline" and "commitment" is perceived as pushy in the American culture.

Which is why our elite schools - both music and otherwise - have so many Asian and South Asian students.

They work harder. They achieve more. Both in and out of the classroom, and certainly in the music room.

In the SF Bay Area at least, the Indian kids are children of tech workers, and I guess their parents feel academics are all that matter. And why would they care about football or baseball? They play cricket in India.

American parents at local high schools with large numbers of Indians have complained there is hardly any support for sports. At some of these schools, American kids are in the minority. And the Indian kids who were born here are pressured by their parents to focus on grades and nothing else. It's possible the colleges in India don't view sports and the arts as important part of the overall educational experience? I don't know.

Besides the US, no one around the world views sports as an important part of the overall educational experience. It's a purely American phenomenon.

Then those people should live somewhere else.

Super smart people come here from all over the world. What matters is what do you know and which problems can you solve.

Race, gender, skin color, or country of origin is irrelevant.

To have been able to meet them and perform well on a project team with them was an amazing experience.

Not just sports but other programs such as fine arts and non-academic extracurriculars. These types of programs create a balance for kids to develop their whole self. This will help them later in life in terms of social skills, leadership and compassion. You can definitely tell the deficiencies in the workplace for those that are not well rounded.

What a ridiculous comment. Those "foreigners" have contributed more to the arts than multigenerational Americans in recent history; sports maybe not as much, but as a classical musician I assure you the former is true. Heck, I'm probably in the MINORITY as an orchestra member who was born in the US.

You don't seem to like immigrants very much (from this + other comments around the sub); are you Indigenous?

You don't get to gatekeep who should or should not live here. And plenty of natural-born Americans aren't into sports either, so are they also not welcomed here by your parameters?

Get out into the real world; then perhaps you'll realize these "foreigners" you despise are a valued thread to our nation's fabric.
