Ground was broken today on the Cambria Hotel on Montgomery Street
Quote:
Located at 321 Montgomery St., the hotel is being developed in collaboration with Choice Hotels International and is slated to open in 2019. “We’re thrilled to be here today for this ground breaking for The Cambria Hotel Savannah Historic District. It is one of many partnerships that we’ve had with Choice Hotels, and we’re thrilled that they could be here with us as well today,” said Kris Patel, chief financial officer of HOS.

“… There are so many moving parts to make something like this happen from design, construction, legal, insurance. There are so many moving parts. I want to thank everyone for giving our family and our company the opportunity to build these relationships with all of you.”

The six-story hotel will feature 103 guest rooms, a rooftop bar, meeting space, a business center and a state-of-the-art fitness center. The hotel’s interior and exterior designs will be locally inspired and include local art.

On a vacant lot directly behind Courtyard by Marriott (right when you come off the I-16 flyover)

Tuesday’s petition sought to establish a new zoning classification for the Mid-City District referred to as TC-3 - Traditional Commercial-Mixed Use Development and to amend certain Mid-City district parking standards. The request included rezoning of five parcels at Bull and 38th Streets where the development is planned.

“My client is trying to develop a very creative project, unlike anything that exist in Mid-City or unlike anything that currently exist in the city of Savannah. They were attracted to Starland because of the entrepreneurial spirit that exists in Starland - art galleries, designers, creative thinkers and people that are creative in nature and this project is creative in nature,” said attorney Robert McCorkle, who spoke on behalf of Foram Group.

The old jail downtown is being torn down to make way for a future 4-story judicial building...
Quote:
The demolition work is part of the county’s ongoing renovation of the courthouse area. Last year exterior and interior work was completed to the courthouse with an eye to the new court facility - phase 2 of a three-phase project - down the road.

The work is expected to restore some of the cohesiveness of Gen. James Oglethorpe’s original plan for the city.

In discussing the plan earlier, Commission Chairman Al Scott said, “I certainly believe the judges ought to have lots of input … (and) I do envision this building being something the citizens can be proud of.”

Good riddance. It was an ugly, abandoned eyesore .... and one of the first things tourists saw coming into the city off I-16 via Montgomery Street or the Talmadge Bride via Oglethorpe Avenue.
