It really doesn't matter if Va is in the northeast. So goes Northern Va goes the entire state now. The state is southern overwhelmingly right wing republican in the state house due to republican re:districting so in that sense Va is southern with antiquated views regarding gay marriage, womens rights, etc.I don't feel the republicans can always count on this state to vote for a republican Presidential candidate anymore due to the heavy democratic vote in Northern Va. Pat Robertson predicted Va would turn blue years ago. In other words if republicans Hope to win the white house again they must nominate a moderate like Chris Christie......Gasp!

I wouldn't consider NOVA the south either. It has much more of a northern-feel, very urban and fast-paced.

I would say Virginia becomes more southern once you leave NOVA and get past Fredericksburg, it's much slower, you hear more southern accents and it just has more of a southern feel which is the complete opposite of NOVA.

Yeah....but no. Virginia is not a Northern state and never will be. Sorry guys. It fought for the confederacy. You can't change history even if you hold your breath. Although I'm just going to note this as yet another point of Wikipedia being completely wrong or off base (which is a pretty common thing actually). Virginia is in the South East.

To be fair a war from 2 centuries ago shouldn't define a state today. Virginia was also a slave state, do we consider it that today? I wouldn't exactly call VA a northern state but it sure as hell isn't ole' dixie anymore. Mid-atlantic is a fitting category for it.

So it’s now 2021 and boy have things changed. Do people still discount that Virginia isn’t transitioning into the Northeast?

Was in Richmond recently and heard no southern accents.

When you go to all of the highly rural areas and small towns across the state and have the same experience, please get back to us with that report. Across much of the South, and especially in many of the larger & faster growing cities, one is hearing fewer and fewer southern accents. That doesn't mean that their states have shifted regions.

Only when south of the James River will you hear southern accents in VA. It’s has been that way for generations. Where people actually live, the accent is atypical.
