1. The Litchfield Inn

City: Litchfield, CT
Category: Accommodations
Telephone: (860) 567-4503
Address: 432 Bantam Rd. (Route 202)

Description: Although at first you might think this is a Georgian manor outside Litchfield center, you will be staying at a modern hotel, albeit one with high ceilings and fairly formal furnishings. There are 30 rooms with private baths, 8 of them being “theme” rooms with king beds at a slightly higher price (don’t worry, they aren’t overdone). Try the Sherlock Holmes Room and search for secret passages. Along with a continental breakfast, the Inn Between Tavern offers dinner daily and lunch on weekends. Unlike many older hotels, this one has wheelchair access, with 2 rooms (including a theme room) with wider doors.

2. Toll Gate Inn

City: Litchfield, CT
Category: Accommodations
Telephone: (866) 567-1233
Address: 571 Torrington Rd. (Route 202)

Description: The 1745 Captain Bull Tavern is the centerpiece around which two other more modern buildings have been added to make a large inn. Set in a grove of white birch trees, the Toll Gate has 20 rooms, with 5 suites among them that boast wood-burning fireplaces and extra sofa beds. Suite 9, located in the “schoolhouse” building, is a favorite among book lovers. The colonial furniture in the rooms might be reproductions, but the flavor of the entire place is genuine. The tavern itself is open for special events and parties, and lighter fare is served on the patio. Call to see if they are currently serving dinner in the historic tavern on Thurs to Sat nights, which depends on the season.
