Baton Rouge offers numerous education opportunities. The state’s major institutions of higher learning, Louisiana State University and Southern University, draw thousands of students annually. The city also is home to Baton Rouge Community College and a campus of Louisiana Community and Technical College, which offers two-year programs and other types of training.

Parents seeking schools for youngsters from pre-K through 12th grade can choose between numerous private schools and the public school system. This includes all the schools in the entire parish, except for the towns of Central, Zachary, and Baker, which have their own school districts. Description: University of Phoenix began at San Jose University in California and opened its first campus in 1976 in Phoenix, Arizona. It now has campuses in 40 states. Description: Founded by E. Keith Rush in 2003, Louisiana Culinary Institute offers a 16-month associate’s degree in Advanced Culinary Arts or Advanced Baking Pastry. Students can become certified in as many as five different areas of culinary arts and professional cooking. The institute is located in a new 28,500-square-foot facility with up-to-date classrooms, three demonstration labs, a restaurant kitchen, a project kitchen, a bakery demonstration, and an amphitheater with a residential kitchen.

Description: The Central Community School District was created in 2006 and is considered one of the fastest growing school systems in Louisiana. Schools include Bellingrath, Tanglewood, Central Intermediate, Central Middle, and Central High School. The enrollment has increased from 2,500 students to an expected 3,800 students for the 2009–10 school year. Students of Central achieved a high level of performance on the state’s accountability tests in spring 2009. Eighty-eight percent of the students in fourth grade and 81 percent of eighth graders met promotional standards on state accountability tests.
