Description: Started in 1995 by Hickory Grove Baptist Church, this Christian school near UNC Charlotte now has nearly 1,100 students in transitional kindergarten through grade 12. The student-teacher ratio is 15 to 1, and high school students may enroll in three Advanced Placement and five honors courses, as well as foreign language, music, and art. Hickory Grove also has a full sports program.

Description: Founded in 1961, Northside Christian serves 875 students, kindergarten through grade 12, and also includes a preschool. One of the many ministries of Northside Baptist, the school shares facilities with the church. Northside Christian requires uniforms and has behavior guidelines. The college-preparatory coeducational school also has a full sports program, fine-arts program, computer labs, science labs, and many student clubs. Church members and families with more than one child in the school receive a discount.

Description: An outreach mission of Providence Road Church of Christ, this school provides a well-rounded curriculum for students in kindergarten through grade 5. In addition to basic courses, classes in Bible, computers, physical education, art, and music are offered. Classes are small with a student-teacher ratio of 16 to 1. Extended care is available from 7 to 7:30 a.m. and after school until 6 p.m. In 2004 Providence Christian was nominated a Blue Ribbon School by the Council for American Private Education.

Description: Providence Day School has been cited for excellence by the U.S. Department of Education, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the College Board Advanced Placement Program. The coeducational school was founded in 1970 and is located on a 45-acre campus in southeast Charlotte. It serves 1,500 students in transitional kindergarten through grade 12 and offers a traditional college-preparatory education. Providence Day does not use a class rank system and does not require community service as several other prominent private schools in Charlotte do. Approximately 75 percent of students participate in athletics or extracurricular activities.

Description: While most area students take a bus to Uptown field trips, the students who attend this private Episcopal school simply walk a few blocks to events at Spirit Square, the Public Library, and the Uptown YMCA. The K-8 school was opened in August 2000 by several Episcopal parishes and stresses a strong academic program with lessons beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to explore their creativity, enhance critical thinking, and sharpen their curiosity and individual leadership. Afternoon care is available, with programs including band, art, cooking, gardening, and computers.

Description: A ministry of United Faith Assembly of God, this prekindergarten through grade 12 Christian school was founded in 1985. Nearly 300 students attend small classes. Description: College-level courses are offered in more than 30 subjects, from calculus to statistics, biology to physics, art history to U.S. history, and English language to Latin literature. CMS offers more AP courses than any independent or private school in the region, and was one of the first school systems in the country to award an AP diploma. Description: This program provides after-school supervised care for children of working parents in kindergarten through sixth grade. After-school care is available at all elementary schools and in several middle schools. Before-school programs are also available at schools with bell times prior to 8:30 a.m.The registration fee is $25. Weekly fees range from $46 to $56 a week for after-school care and $18 to $25 for before-school care. Programs include activities such as art and music, drama and dance, computers, homework sessions, science experiments, cooking projects, games and sports, nature, literacy, and math centers. There is also a summer enrichment day camp for eight weekly sessions at several elementary schools around the county.
