Description: All area students in public, private, charter, or home schools are eligible for free driver education through CMS. The course includes 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours behind the wheel, and is intended as a base for continued parental instruction. North Carolina uses a graduated license program. Students under 18 must complete driver education, pass 70 percent of academic courses, stay enrolled in school, and have a valid learner’s permit with no violations for one year before obtaining an unrestricted driver’s license.
