Sutlers, civilians licensed by the government to follow the armies in wagons and sell luxury goods to the soldiers, were more prevalent among Union than Confederate troops. Today many stores within Gettysburg still call themselves sutlers; unlike their historical ancestors they carry goods for reenactors from both sides of the war.
