63. Guided Historic Walking Tours
City: Gettysburg, PA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (717) 339-6161
Address: 1 Lincoln Square
Description: Begun in summer 2005, the guided historic walking tours bring to life what it was like for the civilians of Gettysburg during the Battle of Gettysburg. Much of the information given during the 90-minute tours is based on diary entries, personal accounts, and letters of the townspeople who were here during the battle, as well as drawings and photographs of the time. Tour guides must pass a test, and the tours are the creation of Main Street Gettysburg, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and highlighting Gettysburg’s rich history. (For more on Main Street Gettysburg, see The Arts chapter.) Tours depart from the Gettysburg Hotel, located on the town square, and run daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You can also arrange evening tours by reservation.

Tours are given seasonally Thursday through Sunday at 8:00 and 9:30 p.m. They last an hour and cover about half a mile, and the area toured is where some of the bloodiest fighting occurred during the Battle of Gettysburg. Civil War Hauntings includes the free use of an electronic ghost finder on its tours, and the EMF meter is just like the equipment professional ghost hunters use.
