Description: Predating the 1975 tourism boomlet, the Gazebo is one of the longest-running art galleries in town. This gift shop, owned and operated by Kay Morton, is now located in a log building that was at one time the first icehouse in Gatlinburg. The Gazebo sells specialty bottles and a gorgeous array of handblown art glass. Their collection of ANRI wood carvings (Hummel-like carved wood figures) is one of the largest in the eastern United States. Your children are welcome, but hang on to them.

Description: Doing business at the same location since 1949, Morton’s is noted for its art glass and porcelain antiques and for its spectacular line of Italian inlaid wood furniture. Morton’s also sells a small selection of very rare (and very pricey) old coins and baseball cards, which has in the past included vintage Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, and Mickey Mantle trading cards.

Description: Here’s a kicky little shop featuring clothing and accessories from natural fibers. Tie-dyed clothing and New Age jewelry items are also available, along with a selection of in-your-face environmental bumper stickers, pins, and posters. And if you have any need for hemp rope, this is one of the few places where you’ll find it sold in bulk. The Hemp Store is about to undergo an expansion, so additional merchandise will ultimately be added.

Description: This shop, the gallery of local photographer Ken Jenkins, is dedicated to Mother Nature in all her splendor. In addition to stunning photography prints, Beneath the Smoke carries sculpture, camping products, and an impressive selection of handbooks and guidebooks to the flora and fauna of the Southeast. The variety of bird guides is simply the best in the area.

Description: Smoky Mountain Angler is the oldest fly-fishing shop in Gatlinburg. They sell tackle, locally hand-tied flies, clothing, and accessories, but they also rent fishing equipment, sell fishing licenses, and provide professional guide services for a half-day or full-day of fishing (including loaned gear if you need it). The shop is located above Papa John’s Pizza in Winery Square, half a mile from traffic light #3 on East Parkway.

Description: It’s all about time at the Clock Peddler. If it tells time, they’ve got it or can get it. From bedside and kitchen novelty clocks to grandfather models with everything short of a symphony orchestra, and movements from windup and pull chain to the latest quartz model, the Clock Peddler has it all. And don’t worry about getting your grandparent clock home in the family sedan—the Clock Peddler will arrange shipping for any large purchase.

Description: Ranger Bob has apparently led an interesting life. His trading post runs the gamut from animal pelts you can wear to black-light lamps and posters. A wide array of puzzles (jigsaw and brain-bender) could keep a puzzle nut of any stripe occupied for days, especially if they’re worked under a black-light lamp. The kids’ backpacks in the form of woodland creatures are interesting enough to make Bob’s worth a look.

Description: Rick Berrier is as established a Parkway fixture as the weekend traffic. He’s been up to his elbows in the wonderful things he does with popcorn since 1961, and he still looks like a kid. Get to the Karmelkorn Shop early in your stay—Rick’s deals on refillable boxes will keep your fingers sticky for your whole trip at a remarkably low cost. Both this shop a second location at 651 Parkway offer a veritable korn-ucopia of flavors, including traditional karmelkorn, cheesekorn, white cheddarkorn, butter-rum korn, toffee korn, and kettlekorn (not to mention just regular old buttered popcorn).

Description: Gatlinburg’s oldest “dress-up” photo shop has more interesting and amusing getups that allow you to express your personality in graphic new ways than any other photo shop in Gatlinburg. The Treadway brothers have been in the novelty photo business for more than 40 years (that’s longer than anyone else in town), and it shows in the imaginative way they approach their craft. For one, the sets you’re photographed in are real—they’re not mere pull-down backdrops. While this location has the most sets to choose from (including a bar, a parlor, a gangster car, and a ’57 Harley Davidson), the Treadways also operate more than half of the dozen or so other old-fashioned photo shops in town, as well as one in the Pigeon Forge Factory Outlet (or “Red Roof”) mall.

Description: The first candy shop in town to open multiple locations, Aunt Mahalia’s has been threatening the dental health of three generations of visitors to the Smokies. It’s hard to imagine the Parkway without the distinctive red-and-white-striped Aunt Mahalia’s stores. The handmade candy they sell includes fudge, pecan logs, taffy, peanut brittle, stick candy, and more. For those who want to indulge with less guilt, there’s also a sugar-free line.

Description: This is Gatlinburg’s oldest sign-carving shop, family-owned and family-operated in the same location since 1971. The Jones family’s signs are made of mahogany, cedar, or redwood. Some are machine-engraved, while others are hand-carved. Their huge variety of designs includes specialty signs in the shape of bears, fish, horse heads, porpoises, dogs, ducks, pigs, campers, saws, arrowheads, cowboy hats, anchors, and even fire trucks. Admit it, you’ve always wanted your family name carved on the side of a bass, haven’t you?

Description: Bob Myrick and his family started out in the early ’70s with a small storefront operation on the present site of their three-story shop. The Myricks, one of Gatlinburg’s leading merchant and philanthropic families, carry an impressive array of high-class glass and ceramic sculpture and a huge selection of souvenir jewelry. They’ll even personalize glass items while you wait.
