Description: The paddlewheeler Creole Queen also offers a jazz dinner cruise, four to five nights a week, including every Fri and Sat. Boarding is at 7 p.m. on the Riverwalk/Canal Street Dock. The two-hour cruise leaves at 8 p.m. and includes music, a Creole buffet, and a cash bar. Boarding is at 1:30 p.m. for the daily harbor cruise, which stops for a tour of Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World. The 2.5-hour tour leaves at 2 p.m. and is narrated by the ship’s captain while cruising past the French quarter and historic Algiers Point. Reservations are highly recommended for both cruises.

Description: Offering virtually everything except someone’s firstborn, the City of New Orleans finally snagged a new National Basketball Association team in 2002 (to replace the one Utah snagged from us a couple of decades earlier). October 30, 2002, marked the inaugural tip-off of the New Orleans (formerly Charlotte) Hornets in their new home, the New Orleans Arena. Ironically, they hosted the Utah Jazz. The arena is the green stadium at the rear of the Superdome on Poydras Street Tickets start at around $15.

Description: The Fair Grounds, America’s third-oldest Thoroughbred race course, offers horse racing from Nov through Mar. In operation since 1872, the Racetrack, as locals call it, also operates a slot-machine gaming facility onsite, as well as nine off-track betting parlors throughout southeast Louisiana.The Fair Grounds Race Course is located near City Park. To get there from downtown, take Esplanade Avenue (which runs along the northwest border of the French Quarter) away from the Mississippi River to Broad Street, turn right, then left at Gentilly. The racetrack is on the left.

Description: This neighborhood bike shop in the Faubourg Marigny, across Esplanade Avenue from the French Quarter, rents city hybrid and mountain bikes, as well as road bikes, off-road mountain bikes, and tandems. Rates start at $10 per hour. The owners suggest BYOH—bring your own helmet—to guarantee a comfortable fit, although helmets can be rented. Hours are Sun 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. all other days, except Wed when the shop is closed. Rentals include locks. A major credit card is a must.

Description: Nine miles of canoe trails, closed to motorized boats, and accessible by three canoe launch docks, allow up close and personal exploration of the swamps and marshes. Guided canoe treks take place some Saturday mornings, and moonlight canoeing is offered monthly on the night before and the night of the full moon, both by reservation only. Another nine miles of waterways are open to all boats. Canoe rentals are available just outside the park, and a number of public and private boat launches provide access for motor boats.

D. “Dee” Geoghegan has more than 40 years’ experience fishing the waters of southeast Louisiana and specializes in light-tackle saltwater fishing in Breton Sound, Chandelur Isle, and the Louisiana marsh aboard his 26-foot Privateer open-hull Fish Stalker. Cost is $350 for up to three persons, plus $40 each for gas, live bait, fish cleaning, and rental rods. Overnight accommodations with private baths and central heat/AC for up to eight are available.
