Description: Once the largest municipal golf facility in the South, City Park suffered major losses in Hurricane Katrina. Reopened in Sept. 13, 2008 after Katrina, City Park currently offers one 18-hole facility, the park’s north course. Plans are in the works to eventually restore the other three courses.

Anyone eager to play in the footsteps of the legends—Watson, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, and Lee Trevino, among others—will want to check out this 7,000-yard Ron Garl-renovated course (originally designed by Robert Bruce Harris), which has hosted 26 PGA tour events. The championship 18-hole par 72 golf course, nestled between century-old oak and cypress trees, offers tight fairways and smooth, quick greens.

Description: Hop into the saddle amid the oak trees of New Orleans’ favorite park and learn the ropes of handling a horse. One-hour guided trail rides through the park cost $30. Horseback riding lessons are available as well at the stable on Filmore Street near the golf course. Classes are held year-round. Riding camps for children during holidays and evening lessons are available.

Description: The largest public tennis facility in the South, the City Park Tennis Center has been named one of the top 25 municipal tennis facilities in the nation by Tennis magazine. As many as 70,000 people play tennis yearly on the center’s 21 lighted hard and clay courts. The facility offers a number of programs for children and adults. Court rentals range from $7 to $10 per hour.

Description: Louisiana State Parks offer travelers the opportunity for overnight camping, hiking, and swimming. Five such sites—St. Bernard State Park in Violet, Bayou Segnette State Park in Westwego, Fairview-Riverside State Park in Madisonville, Fort Pike State Commemorative Area in the Rigolets, and Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville—are located within an hour’s drive of New Orleans. All parks are open daily, year-round with staff members on call 24 hours. Improved campsites feature electricity and water; unimproved sites do not. Description: Thirty minutes across the Mississippi River from New Orleans is an unusual blend of natural recreation and urban comfort. Swampland meets marsh, and nature enthusiasts can observe wildlife while children play in the wave pool. Facilities include 98 premium campsites, a massive group camp, playgrounds, picnic tables, pavilions, and a wave pool. A conference room rounds out the facility. Boat launches provide access to both fresh- and saltwater fishing with catches of bass, catfish, bream, redfish, and speckled trout.Admission to the park is $1 per person. Camping is $18 per night. To get here, cross the Mississippi River Bridge to the Westbank Expressway, and continue west on US 90 to Westwego.

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, named after that rascally pirate-turned-patriot-turned-pirate, is composed of three parts: the Barataria Preserve on the West Bank near Crown Point, dedicated to the natural and cultural history of the region’s uplands, swamps, and marshlands; the Chalmette Battlefield, 6 miles southeast of New Orleans and the site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans; and the New Orleans Visitor Center in the French Quarter’s French Market, which interprets the history of New Orleans and Louisiana’s Mississippi Delta region.
