Classy move by the Orioles today to have a moment of silence at the ballpark to honor former Red Sox (and Pirates) pitcher Tim Wakefield, who just passed away from brain cancer at the age of 57.
I don't mean this to be insulting or offensive to anyone. Much less Wakefield's friends and family..
But.. At least it wasn't ANOTHER former Phillies player. It certainly sounds like a glioblastoma, though I don't believe anything official has been said to confirm or deny that.. Just that it was brain cancer..
Zack Britton is officially retiring from baseball after a 12-year big-league career, the 35-year-old pitcher told The Athletic in an exclusive interview earlier this month. Britton was a two-time All-Star with three 30-save seasons under his belt, including an American League-leading season in 2016. He spent seven and a half seasons with the Baltimore Orioles and the following four and a half with the New York Yankees. The left-hander finishes his career with 154 career saves, a 35-26 record and 3.13 ERA in 442 games (641 innings).

Based on what I believe my predictions to be for the coming season, Baltimore appears poised to be a solid contender and possibly challenge for the league championship. They'll outclass the Yankees in the AL East.

It will be the 1970s Orioles again. They'll certainly give New York a run for their money. The current Yankees are looking more like the CBS-era Yankees.
NY Times tells me that Jackson Holliday "is the best prospect in baseball" and their farm system is among the best in MLB. I sure hope so.

BALTIMORE -- The defending American League East champion Orioles took the field Thursday afternoon to play their first game of a new era. The buzz around Camden Yards -- where David Rubenstein and members of his ownership group took in Opening Day with a sellout crowd of 45,029 fans -- was palpable well before the first pitch was thrown.
In his team debut, Burnes racked up 11 strikeouts over six dominant innings to help power the O’s to an 11-3 win over the Angels in their first game of the 2024 season. The right-handed ace retired 18 of the 19 Los Angeles batters he faced, the only blemish being a two-out solo homer by Mike Trout in the first.
That type of performance is exactly why the Orioles swung a blockbuster trade on Feb. 1, when they acquired Burnes from the Brewers to boost the top of their rotation.
Due to a rainout in NYC, the first pitch of the season was thrown by the Orioles' Corbin Burns, a major off-season acquisition; he threw six innings of 1-hit / 11-strikeout baseball to notch his first win this year.

He was driving force behind construction of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Petco Park in San Diego. And the renovations of Fenway Park in Boston. But his contributions to baseball extended far beyond his influence on ballparks, which transformed the sport. He was a titanic figure, a man who brought architectural consultant Janet Marie Smith into the game, mentored legendary general manager Theo Epstein, oversaw three World Series titles as president of the Red Sox and coined the term “Evil Empire” for the New York Yankees during his time in Boston.
