It would maybe be more okay if between the 459 and 422 junctions on 59 there was a dual-carriage throughway so that people going from 459 to 422 or vice versa don't have to get on the main line of 59.

Still, the general tilt of the loop is an issue. Perhaps a west-side freeway between the south side of Hoover going up and ending at 422 halfway between where it turns south and 65 would help some?

This will absolutely never happen. It has been "ready to start" for 10 years now. Construction was supposed to start several years ago. There is no chance this will be done by 2030 if ever.

The cyan piece I added in MS Paint shows the only other talked about design I've ever seen.

The section between 75 and 79 was supposed to start last year. I went out there and tried to see if any land had been cleared or if any equipment was in place, but nothing had been done.

Building new highway after highway is not progressive. It is recycling on old idea. We have reaped most of the benefit that we can expect from highway building. Also, people seem to forget that even after the building, there is expensive maintenance.
Alabama progressives need to get off highway building and casinos to solve all the people's woes.

ALDOT's director, John Cooper spoke about projects in the area on AL.

Basically he said everything was on track including the Northern Beltline. They are just waiting on approval from the army core of engineers which they expect to get. He hopes the section from 65 down to 59 is completely signing the next 12 to 15 years.

I was a supporter of this project, now not so much. I don't see the economic benefits of this road as it is. I'm starting to think its a major waste of money and resources that could be used to solve issues around Birmingham.

I'm curious, why were you for it before? Did you have the previous impression the economic benefits were greater previously?

I think most of the money to be used to build it can ONLY be spent on a road like this. The Feds won't let you use the funds on something like 280 for instance or Grants Mill Road.

I was for it because it was thinking it would be an economic catalyst like 459 was for the Southern part of the county, and it would divert truck traffic away from downtown.

My thinking now is an at grade parkway could achieve the same objectives with less cost. I would like to see a toll road proposal if it has to be built as an interstate.

This is true for now. There are rumblings that's these funds will be un-earmarked at some point. There could be a push for this if the money could be used for more pressing transportation needs in the area.

HOV lanes and other expansions for I-65
Rebuilding malfunction junction
Improvements for the RME and 280 corridor
Improvments for I-20/59 west of downtown
