What am I missing here? When I pull up the link, it ranks Idaho #6
#39 is for the "Personal" category. They define that category as, "Personal freedom includes a variety of categories including victimless crimes, guns, tobacco, and education." Not sure exactly what that entails, but as you've discovered, the overall score is pretty good. Ya gotta look at the whole picture.
Quoted, (in part), from the "Analysis" section:
Quote:
As an extremely conservative state, Idaho scores very well on economic freedom but poorly on personal freedom. Idaho wins the title for “most improved state” between the years 2009 and 2011.
and
Quote:
Idaho does very well on gun and educational freedoms, but scores poorly on victimless crimes (crime-adjusted incarceration rates are more than one and a half standard deviations worse than the national average), marijuana, alcohol (it has state beer, wine, and spirits wholesale and retail monopolies with a high markup on spirits especially), gambling, and same-sex partnerships.
and from the "Policy Recommendations" section:
Quote:
Privatize the state alcohol monopolies and adopt a license system. This reform alone would have raised Idaho eight places on personal freedom.
So . . . the "Personal" category includes victimless crimes, guns, tobacco, and education. The state scores well on guns and education (second quote) and poorly on victimless crimes and stuff that I do not have any interest in or contact with, (don't smoke or drink - never have). To me, the #39 is not relevant, but the overall for every category together is. I'll take #6.

The point is that Idaho is not a land of personal freedom outside of maybe guns. But that is the topic here, guns. So if you're main goal is to easily carry/obtain a weapon, then Idaho is fine.
You get freedom here in Idaho if you happen to be an extremely right wing social conservative who expects everyone to see and do things that particular way.

'Til I was in my 40s, what you're deeming to be "extremely right wing social conservative" was simply called being normal. The prevalence and/or even expectation of normalcy in Idaho is the number one factor that attracts many like myself in California, where being normal is becoming more freakish by the day.

Well, then I'm one seriously lucky guy.
Idaho was previously #4 on that overall freedom ranking...so slipping to #6 is a step in the wrong direction. But on the gun rights issue Idaho has been very good overall.
But again...with open carry...just because you can...doesn't mean you should. (This applies to a lot of things in life, really)...

That's one of the many reasons why I'll never leave. And look out, I'm moving to the Boise area from Northern Idaho, sometime next year. And although I don't open carry, I might have to start.

And therein lies my point. You want to define normal as those who look, act, and speak like you (and historically that was the case because people like you, I presume, are the type of people who hold wealth and political power in this nation).
The problem is: a) there are so many more people who live in this nation who don't look, act, and speak like you and b) the Constitution guarantees them the same rights as you.
It's endemic in people who cry about how the country is changing culturally, demographically, religiously, linguistically, racially, et al, and who want to move away from that "threat" as they consider it. It's just sad.
But this all has nothing to do with guns, just like the right to carry (which I support, by the way) has little to do with personal freedom. So many so-called conservatives and libertarians (as let's be honest, progressive/liberals do it too) want to pick and choose their freedoms to have and limitations to regulate. So for you it's okay to open carry, but we need to tell people what they can do with their bodies because, ya know, religion and stuff.

That's fine. If you think Boise is getting more conservative, I have a bridge I'll sell you too...
I wonder how you'll take living in a city that increasingly regulates and dictates your property rights for the sake of the common good.
