This has been discussed elsewhere. It's legal in Idaho, but not generally advisable IMO. Why give any potential adversary the ability to know you're armed, where you're carrying it, and even what type (high capacity, etc). Better to have the tactical advantage and choose your time to escalate a situation if you must.
There are times I will open carry when enroute to/from the woods or something, but otherwise I'm carrying concealed. It's tactically far superior. Just my $.02 as a retired SoCal LEO.
While I do not (unless stomping in the woods), I love the fact that others do and no one bats an eye. (at least in NID)
You need a carry permit, to open carry in city limits. In the county its a free for all.
Enjoy your Civil Rights, Citizen.
I too agree with Sage. I too am a retired LEO. I carry concealed in a city environment as I do not like to give the advantage to Mr. Bad Guy seeing me as the first target having an open carry. If I am hiking or fly fishing in the woods, then I will open carry my 357 Colt Python and my wife carries her bear spray.
CCW is the way to go. Surprise is always the best friend in these types of situations. BTW, ID recognizes all other states' CCW. Just got to have it on you when carrying CCW.
I have no idea whether it is legal in Boise or not. Sounds like it probably is, from what people are saying. However, I've lived in Boise for all of my 37 years, and deal with people every day for work, and I've never once seen anyone (who isn't law enforcement) open carrying. Never. So while you might not get a second glance in N.ID, you definitely will freak some people out in Boise.
On the other hand, I know a lot of people with concealed weapon permits who do carry concealed.
Idaho is an open carry state so yes, you can open carry anywhere in the state. However, you do need a permit to carry concealed within city limits, but you can carry concealed everywhere else. While I have a permit and carry concealed, if open carry is your thing, then I encourage it. If people have a problem with it, it's their problem, not yours.
