$0 - I discovered that I could do a better job with a Flowbee than any stylist. Over the past decades I've saved hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

My haircut is $14 and I tip $5. But I also go every week to the same guy and he does a good job.

^^^ I think that there is no real obligation to tip a person who gets paid a minimum wage or more.
Lately I saw a tip jars at drive-by windows! That's pretty shameless, but I guess they try, because nowadays lots of people think that they should tip just about everyone.

$2.00 usually, but if they take way too long or do a bad job then $0. The whole point of a tip is to be a reward for good service...

AS an owner of a chain of low cost salons in Ca. ($10 cuts), I can tell you the average tip is $2.00. However many only tipped $1.00, and sometimes nothing, while once in a while they got lucky and got a five. But I'd say it averaged out to $2.00 per person. Sundays were the worst days. Many of the church crowed came in after church. Many didn't tip at all. No one wanted to work on Sundays, because tips were so bad. I witnesses it myself running the front desk sometimes.

Tips, especially for a low cost haircut are needed and depended on, as what the stylist makes on a haircut is not more than about $8.00 an hour. Considering they spent $10,000- $12,000 for a year of schooling to become licensed, I think they deserve more than minimum wage. Most of my customers were long term customers and I went through two generations with them. They obviously were happy with their haircuts or they wouldn't keep coming back. No excuse for not tipping, unless you were to encounter a rude stylist who didn't listen to you.

^^^ Well, there would be an excuse for not tipping, if they were paid a little better...
Eight bucks is way below the national average:
Barbers, Hairdressers, and Cosmetologists : Occupational Outlook Handbook: : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

There is a long list of occupations where the majority of workers make low wages - less than $10 per hour, and most of them don't expect or depend on any tips.

Low-Wage Occupations
Your link states average at $10.75 an hour. Most shops charge more for their cuts. Also, most pay commission, and not a guaranteed minimum rate, benefits, social security taxes, etc., paid vacations and holidays and sick days. Some stylists earned considerably more. $8.was the bare minimum. At any rate, the point being it is a job that requires schooling, and it is a job that customarily involves tipping just like restaurant waiters or waitresses, or taxi cab drivers or parking attendants, or bell boys etc. etc.

If you don't tip these people (other than for very bad service), then I consider you cheap. The only exception would be from someone who is mentally ill or very poor. You can be a low tipper, but no tip at all is pretty much a slap in the face. Just my opinion.

So now people who don't tip everyone are mentally ill??
Lots of jobs require schooling. That's not an excuse for demanding a tip.
