My haircut is $11.00 and I give a $4.00 tip. It's more than they deserve since my haircut takes all of 2 minutes if that. It's just a quick trim since I have hardly any hair. I've never liked the American form of tipping, but if you live here your stuck with it. Tipping is just about demanded and expected in this country and we all know it. I'm surprised the nurse at the Doctors' office, that takes our vitals before a Doctors visit isn't thought of as a tipping location.
Actually it is relevant. Not only does cutting your own hair eliminate the guesswork on the tip, but it eliminates the entire charge.
When I had a dispute with my barber who was pro-vaccination - anti-mask, I'm pro-mask - anti-vaccination, it was the best thing that ever happened. I had to order a pair of clippers on Amazon for $40. I have already saved 3 times the price of the clippers by cutting my own hair.
For the record, at the end I had bumped the tip for my haircuts from 20% to 33%. Because I knew my barber's business was hurting with the pandemic, and he was taking a pretty big risk cutting people's hair in the middle of a pandemic. But honestly it was a waste of money. I don't think he cared one bit.
Which seems to be common now days. People don't appreciate tips anymore, they expect them. Hell fast food places now expect you to leave tips, for basically nothing. Just for the privilege of being allowed into their store buy some food. Tipping is out of control and meaningless these days.
I tip 2 bucks maybe? It's their choice to work there and make whatever wage they are making. Nobody forces them to take the job. That said, I go to Great Clips, and often not the same great clips... I've gone to ones in Sioux Falls, Watertown, Rapid City, and in Wisconsin and Iowa. I don't have a personal hairstylist.
Looking at this thread I should tip more? Pretty sure great clips haircuts are up to $17. I'll give $20.
It wasn't that long ago a haircut was $12 and I gave $15.
I use Great Clips also, I had went several months and was shocked went I went in and saw $17. The last two times I have used coupons for $8.99 which are coming out pretty frequently. I usually leave a $3.00 tip. They also can’t seem to keep help as I see a new crew each visit.

I think it's just that Great Clips is the type of place where newly-minted cosmetologists start to get some experience under their belts but when they can get a job at a more upscale place, they leave.

It's not surprising considering their customers think 17 dollars is a lot for a haircut and they leave lousy tips.
I got a quick haircut today at a local barbershop. The charge for the haircut was 17 bucks. I left a 3 dollar tip but I probably should have left the guy 5 bucks. Was I being a cheap bastard? I'm trying to cut back on my spending but I feel guilty when I get cheap with my tips.
The place I go, they charge $15 for a hair cut, I generally tip $10 or $11. Some may think I'm tipping too much, but I look at it this way. If all the barbers go out of business cause they are not making enough money, what do you have left? Hair Stylists. You lucky get get a haircut for less than $40 at a salon, Some are $60, and they still expect a tip. No thanks, I'll pay $25 for a $15 hair cut and be more than happy to pay it.
I think the $5 is fine, after all what can you buy nowadays for $5. You probably wouldn't miss it, right? But use 15-20% as a ruler.
If you are dining, in a large group, tipping $5 per diner is good.
