I was at a thrift shop earlier when I heard the cashier ask the customer this question. She asked her total, it was $3.98, so she told them to charge $5. I guess it works. I always decline.

I was also in a thrift store today, and every single customer within earshot agreed to "round up" and were enthusiastically thanked for it. Guess it makes them feel good?

I've stopped donations in all forms except to my local food bank. You just can't be certain where your money is going today. Too many left-wing NGOs hiding behind pleasant and altruistic sounding names that exist mainly to provide the doctrinaire and over-credentialed with lucrative employment and get Democrats elected.

I also kinda enjoy the pouty look on their face when they hand me back 27 cents.

Why are you so sure the food bank is acceptable? The people I know that go there are cheap not poor.

I also only donate locally, to animal shelters, food banks/soup kitchens, and gifts for low-income children at Christmas.

You could always say, 'How 'bout rounding DOWN?'

That IS pretty funny; you can see their faces fall and tell how p____ they are when you don't round up or tip. It's also a little scary if they haven't prepared your food yet!

I honestly hate the round up programs. I hear it and I think, some jerk in middle management HR is making these poor cashiers slow down everyone's check out time just a bit more for 50 cents. As such, if the checkout lines are slow I will never contribute, because management is getting distracted and not making checkout efficient.

I also tend to want to know about the charity I'm supporting, but it's not a realistic thing to do for 50 cents so there's an aspect of do I trust the company I'm buying from. If it's a franchise, then no. Too easy to make an accounting adjustment and pocket that cash. If it's Corporate, I'm listening. Proceeds to 2nd Harvest....no problem. Proceeds for local fire equipment in one of the best funded programs in the world....pass. Support for cure research, yes. Support for disease awareness, no.

In theory, what I like about the idea is that it would be a very efficient raise for the beneficiary organization. There's not 50,000 sponsors to sign up, mail receipts to etc. It would also be easy to record on the supporting organization's ERP. Those registers need to tie out at the end of the day, irrespective of the transaction type. The same can't be said for most Not for profits. There is a benefit to the sponsor as well, especially if they do a lot of cash sales. Change is getting expensive. It's not the worst idea, so long as it doesn't overtake the original reason why I'm there.

What would push this to a likely affirmative all the time....tell me the company is matching it. If I know they have skin in the game, then someone's looked at this a little closer. It wouldn't have to be dollar for dollar either. But if they have a match, that tells me inherently they have a record keeping system tracking this because they need a final answer at the end of the day.
