I answer with "absolutely not" if I'm not using self checkout

Especially when they're trying to guilt trip you "would you like to donate to kids with cancer" ?

There are plenty of good charities to give money to.
Some supermarket quasi scam charity that I'm sure they're getting the write-offs on doesn't cut it for me. If it's such a great charity let them donate.

I only donate at one store "Petsmart" and usually give 2 bucks.
I remember way back after Hurricane Katrina there was a local convenience store with a jug on the counter for "donations" to Katrina victims. It had a handwritten sign; it didn't look like it was for any organization. So I am checking out and the manager starts putting pressure on me to donate and I say "I will donate directly to the red cross" She actually called me "cheap". I then proceeded to tell her I WILL NOT DONATE to her employee beer fund because there was no guarantee the money in the jug would help anyone. I never frequented that store again.

I can't paint corporate execs as heartless people who don't care about charity, but I wonder how prevalent these "round up for charity" things would be if "company with a conscience" wasn't such a big selling point. It's hard to imagine that there aren't any marketing considerations behind the round-up prompts. I might consider it if the company posts a yearly report on the round-up campaign, and if the report is properly audited by an external third party.

I'm more bothered by the tip jars everywhere, whether a physical tip jar or a prompt on the card terminal.

I like it. It's a small thing, much better than that awful Tip Screen w/ large denominations for simply handing me a cup to go fetch my own coffee in. I had an ex that worked in restaurants, they pay those people ridiculously low wages, much lower than legal minimum wages.

I just give a polite and very-flat "no thank you".......many cashiers have stopped asking me.

I went to a bakery today to get something special for a lunch tomorrow. When I walked in there were two young men behind the counter. No one said good morning and when I waited in front of the display case where the items I wanted were, no one came over but still stood on the other side of the counter, one person doing nothing but staring at me. I thought WTH? So, I pointed to the case and said out loud, I need some help please. One of them finally came over and helped me.

At the time to pay, the question on the terminal is for a tip... 20%, 18%, 15% other or skip. No brainer, SKIP!
