Another thing that surprises me is Berlin, NH. Manchester, Nashua, and Concord, 50% or more of their Black populations are foreign-born. Many Somali and Sudanese refugees have been resettled in those cities. Portsmouth, the majority of its Black population is American-born. Portsmouth has Portsmouth Naval Shipyard nearby (in Kittery, Maine). The military influence is there.

Berlin, NH, is a surprise to me. It's in the far north of New Hampshire, and rather isolated. There is no military base there or anything. Most of its Black population is American-born.

Yes, that is interesting, as they only have a community college, but I’m not sure if that plays much of a part in the population. I did come across this article that explains the reason: https://www.governing.com/archive/tn...diversity.html

Hanover/Lebanon at least have Dartmouth and a medical center in that area of the state.

Prison. I should have thought of that. In some places, prisoners are counted as part of the population. Same deal with Waupun, WI. I saw that Waupun, in rural Wisconsin, had a decent size Black population. I thought "cool". And then I saw there was a prison there. I wasn't thrilled at all.

Given that Hanover/Lebanon has Dartmouth, I'm surprised there aren't more Blacks living there.

For a spot in far northern New Hampshire, that's a respectable percentage for Berlin.

Not too respectable, though, if it’s because of a prison.

I would be shocked if more Blacks live in Silver Spring than Upper Marlboro now. It's essentially the Black Belt of the entire DC suburbs.
Upper Marlboro gave us one of my favorite bands: Dying Fetus.

Knew a girl from the Ogoni tribe of Nigeria. She was raised in Manchester…. having arrived there around 1999/2000 after a Shell oil spill decimated her homeland. Doesn’t speak highly of Manchester but did give me insight into the community there. Basketball culture there was strong and she was super valid. Best girl I ever played.
