Holy crap, 20 years ago popeyes was forbidden fruit for us in the upstate. Today we have to walk in the door and wake people up to cook chicken. I know it’s tough today to find folks to work fast food, but how does Chik-fi-la draw from a completely different pool?
Well, the other part is pricing, at least when it comes to chicken. You see newspapers from the 70's where a KFC 2 piece with sides was like $2..
Now, just 8 pieces of chicken and 4 biscuits sets you back over $20. When you can get the same basic thing at Ingles or Publix for under $10..
Speaking of chicken Pollo Campero is returning to Greenville in the Cherrydale area. They want to add close to a dozen franchise units in SC and 24 in NC. Their US headquarters is in Dallas Tx.
Publix chicken is always raved about being some of the best outside of Grandma's house.
They have raised the price though...$9.99 for 8 piece. You can make the biscuits from scratch for under a buck at home.
Harris Teeter 8 fried piece chicken is now $7.99, but was on sale for $5.99 last week. They have nice large pieces with a nice, crispy texture. I just add some garlic and herb seasoning to add a bit more flavor. Publix fried chicken has always been good, but a bit pricier these days.

Due to inflation and the supply chain shortages this past year fast food fried chicken prices have significantly increased, along with everything else. That $2.99 standard combo meal went to $5.99 to $7.99 and is now around $8.99 to $9.99 most places. Popeyes seems a bit higher than Bojangles.
Some Popeyes in the Upstate may need better management and quality control. A well managed Popeyes presents a good product. I have found the Boiling Springs location to be good.
Could be wrong but I just have a feeling that many of the new Popeye's locations in the upstate will not be around in a few years. Bojangle's seems to be the more established and popular choice in the Carolina's and Popeye's doesn't have the breakfast business to fall back on like Bo's.

I'd be shocked. Personally, I think Popeyes has a SLIGHT edge over Bo's on the chicken itself. Sides.. Pretty equal. Each has the basics nailed and enough uniqueness.
I do agree with you that the breakfast business is huge for Bo's.
But, Popeyes does have a much more.. Diverse menu with the shrimp and all.
Popeyes does need to address service issues, at least with the one here in Mauldin. That'll kill you quicker than anything. If something happens to them, that will be the reason why.
