When did the Shakey's here close? Must've been before my arrival to the area or else I'd have found it. Grew up on Shakey's in Nashville. Went to one in Auburn this past fall. Tasted very familiar.
Took my wife and her daughter there for our first date way back in 1992 (or was it 1993????).....

Yeah, it worked pretty good: married +19 years, daughter graduating from RTR with an accounting degree (she wants to become a JBT with the FBI) and a son that getting ready for UNA and a five year master's degree program.

Can't complain!

- Fogcutter, was on University, is now Bentley Hyundai.

I still have not found anything in Huntsville that can even compare with the above restaurants.
why did they go away then? Just location?

I believe the Fogcutter was closed down because the owners decided to retire or move.

I remember a friend of mine telling me he went to the burning of the Fogcutter.

They donated the building to the Fire Dept to be burned for training.

Don't know about the others.

Darryl's was further down.

It is now a LaQuinta, they tore down the original building

Daryll's was next to La Quinta where now that appartment bloc is.
That La Quinta was there since at least 1985 when I came the first time to Huntsville and stayed there.

Twickenham was kind of forced by the city to sell to expand the VBCC.
Fogcutter was the younger generation as owner who could spend lots of money but had no idea how to run a business.
Green Bottle Grille, I'm not going into details here.

All 3 had a very good location, so that was never a problem.

Blerg. Yes, you are right, it's the other crappy motel. The extended stay place. Can't remember the catchy name now.
