Interesting point.

In its third-quarter report, The New York Times Company said it had added 210,000 net digital-only subscribers in the three months through September, giving it 9.41 million along with 670,000 print subscribers.

The Times Company has focused on getting subscribers to sign up for more than one of its offerings, which include the core news report, Cooking, Games, the Wirecutter review site and the sports news site The Athletic. Nearly 3.8 million of the 9.41 million digital-only subscribers are subscribed to at least two products, the company said."

However proving once again no good deed goes unpunished both tech billionaires; Soon-Shiong and Jeff Bezos are losing massive sums on their foray into news publishing.

The NYTimes is giving away subscriptions. They are currently charging $52/year or $1/week. People will pay that just to play Wordle. In my neck of the woods, the Boston Globe is selling 6 months of internet access for 1 dollar! After the 6 months it goes up but all you have to do is cancel, use another account and you can get another 6 months for a dollar. They are scamming their advertisers into supporting their papers through bogus subscription numbers.

And how's this for a laugh: The NYTimes Corporation bought the Boston Globe in 1993 for 1.1 billion, they sold it 20 years later for 70 million.

These papers have been absolutely ruined by leftists and I will laugh the day they go under.

Of course union upset had a walkout before layoffs announced.

But the LA Times lost this battle years ago. This was the last straw not the only one was when they altered a photo of Larry Elder to make it seem he was hitting someone when he did not. They were basically a wing of the Newsom team during the recall election

https://dailycaller.com/2021/09/10/l...ing-supporter/

They spouted leftist talking points for years as do many other big city papers. I guess paywalls and physical paper are too expensive for leftist financially and socially.
The irony is lost .......majority of failing businesses are owned and run by blue voters. Biden's America is doing what they promised to do. Blue voters are like chickens voting the fox into hen house.

I agree. Surviving doesn't mean that you're doing "fine."

Yes, sad, but not in the way that you make it out to be. It's sad because it shows that the traditional news media has lost its way and, subsequently, lost the trust of tens of millions of Americans based on biased (toward one side) reporting and hit jobs, which is a betrayal of their responsibilities as a supposed "free" press. But it didn't have to be this way. People's distrust of traditional news media is well deserved.

I used to get the Sunday edition, about 40 years ago. (Maybe 45 years...)

The classified section was the BEST place to find cars/trucks or moto's.

Looking for a new Honda car? Great, they'd cut each others' throat to get your business. Posting prices WAY below what the San Diego dealers would do.
I saved literally thousands, doing this.

To a certain extent, this is still going on today. Only, it's NOT with the L.A. times, but with the "AutoTrader" or "Cycletrader." (There may be others, but AT & CT work for me.)

Never read any of the rest of the rag. (Didn't have a bird cage to line, either!)

Birds have standards too, ya know!

What are those "dodgy and questionable treatments"?

https://fi.edu/en/awards/laureates/p...eatic%20cancer.

"The restructuring comes at a challenging time in the news industry as traditional outlets struggle against economic headwinds. The Washington Post, CNN, NBC News and NPR all have shed hundreds of journalists in the last year as print circulation, ratings and advertising revenue fall dramatically. Local news outlets have been particularly hard hit; a recent report found that more than 2,500 journalism jobs were eliminated last year.

Soon-Shiong has maintained his commitment to revitalize The Times. But the paper’s ambitious turnaround plan launched five years ago was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Hollywood strikes last year that significantly reduced advertising spending by major film and TV studios.

Soon-Shiong and his family have covered more than $100 million in operational losses and capital expenses since the acquisition, the owner said. He has pledged to continue to invest in the organization and absorb losses."

Agreed. The media of 1984 was many levels better than the trash in most newsrooms in 2024.

LA Times is just about as bad as The Daily Beast, Vox, Insider etc. Their cities and state are struggling in many areas yet they keep pumping out the left wing talking points and being a patsy for the democrats in charge. Gone is the red California whose cities were safe, business was booming and Hollywood actually produced a decent movie.

Toys R Us was the #2 toy store in the USA when they went under, so revenue does not = profit.

Sears was the #1 department store for decades...

Sports Illustrated was the #1 sports magazine, & here's where they are at right now:

https://deadline.com/2024/01/sports-...up-1235797884/

CBS, ABC, & NBC evening News, are a shell of their former selves.

CNN is failing too.

Most of the traditional media is losing money, & are being propped up by a few Billionaires so they can use them to spew propaganda.

Americans want the facts...real news. Only ~25% of Americans want radical Leftist propaganda, & media can't profit off that 25%.
