Funny this thread should be back near the top of the queue tonight. As I type this, there are ten cop cars outside the front of my house.

There was a gang fight not more than a half-hour ago. Knives were pulled, some minor injuries. This part of SW Shaw is completely blocked off. All happened within thirty feet of my front door.

Three of the perps slipped away during questioning (not sure how that happened, the place was crawling with officers.) So they now have the K-9 unit(s) out and about looking for them.

Welcome to the end result of a state that doesn't deport illegals. Yes, these are Mexican gangs--most likely SSC and STC.

No, but my son lives in Portland and has never encountered any gangs or violence anywhere...I guess it just depends on where you live. I'm somwhat familiar with the area as I've been there quite a bit, I'm assuming when you say "outer" SE you're referring to Gresham and out that way? In your opinion, does the "inner" SE have issues with gang violence...I ask because I'm moving there (Belmont/Sunnyside) in May thanks!

No, inner SE does not have gangs! By outer I mean near the 205 freeway and out towards Gresham.

I live in inner SE and there is gang activity here. Neighborhood stores are constantly being tagged. It isn't dangerous but they are here. My friend in North Portland constantly has to repaint her garage doors because of tagging.

There is evidence that gang related trouble is on the rise according to the newspapers. But I suggest that anyone interested in the gang or crime rate should GOOGLE the city of Portland to find the stats on this. Whomever responds on this thread can only speak for where they live which, like any other city, has gangs in some areas but not in others.

Default Outer SE driving?

Hmmm, we're considering a preschool out by Division and SE 130th, past the 205 freeway. Of course, we'd be headed there mornings and afternoons, but is that area of concern if we're driving around? And for the kids? The school is in a church, but still....

No, you're not in danger. You have to keep in perspective that there are very few places in the Portland area where this is a huge problem. And it's a new problem so it's a big deal to people. Please don't feel like the entire area is a massive gang nightmare. It's not at all!

It is hard to read these posts and accept that this country was ever settled at all. Indians after all were rather more hostile and intractable than most of the gang kids. The real problem is that individual American's are left to themselves to solve 'community' issues because there is no 'community'. Its every man (woman) for themselves. Governments line their pockets with our money and spend it on projects that are beneficial to them and hang the petty quality of life issues. Think on a trillion dollars and imagine that kind of capital being used to actually solve some problems on the ground here and now in and on the U.S.

I'm not sure what your point here is. Are you suggesting that we're all a bunch of whiners and that I, for example, should have gone out there with a shotgun and picked off the gangs myself? I would have been happy to, if political correctness, and left-wing lunacy wouldn't have relegated me to a jail cell for my efforts.

I don't think we're the ones that need to man up, Nancy. I think you need to accept that there is gang activity and quit using your head for a seat cushion.
