HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY: These heroes are dead. They died for liberty - they died for us. They are at rest. They sleep in the land they made free, under the flag they rendered stainless, under the solemn pines, the sad hemlocks, the tearful willows, and the embracing vines. They sleep beneath the shadows of the clouds, careless alike of sunshine or of storm, each in the windowless Place of Rest. Earth may run red with other wars - they are at peace. In the midst of battle, in the roar of conflict, they found the serenity of death. I have one sentiment for soldiers living and dead: cheers for the living; tears for the dead. ~Robert G. Ingersoll

Today, my flag flies at half staff. It is in honor of those that I fought along side of, the ones that didn't come home. They came home, but transported differently.

Several years ago I had the honor of bringing back a fellow that didn't make it, stand up and polish. He did what he could, and he did it well. He took one through the scope. It was the hardest thing I did in my military time. I've lost kin folk, but that really brought it home. I brought it home with pride. When I left Asia, I thought it was another trip and would be over quickly. A few days home and I'm on my way. That didn't happen. I took my friend home. His resting place. Charley would rest easy at Wounded Knee. Charley was my spotter. He was my mentor. Charley taught me how to squees one off. Charlie was a good old red blooded Sioux. I took him home, I planted him, and I learned a lot. I watched them stand a head dress and I watched them stand a bow. I listened while they spoke and I was fortunate that somebody translated for me. Charlie was a warrior. He proved himself to the tripe. Better yet, he proved himself to me. And, to his nation.

Charlie, my flag flies at half staff for you.

Beautiful thread, thanks!

In honor of DDay, this is a beautiful tribute on the Beaches of Normandy that shows in black and white just what it looks like to have lost all those souls. God bless the families of those who served and died protecting our freedom.
A stunning tribute in honor of the 9,000 souls lost on the beaches of #Normandy http://thefallen9000.info/

Default To our Gold Star families, with love...

To our Gold Star families, with love...
Merry Christmas from Heaven
I still hear the songs
I still see the lights
I still feel your love
on cold wintry nights
I still share your hopes
and all of your cares
I'll even remind you
to please say your prayers
I just want to tell you
you still make me proud
You stand head and shoulders
above all the crowd
Keep trying each moment
to stay in His grace
I came here before you
to help set your place
You don't have to be
perfect all of the time
He forgives you the slip
If you continue the climb
To my family and friends
please be thankful today
I'm still close beside you
In a new special place
I love you all dearly
now don't shed a tear
Cause I'm spending my
Christmas with Jesus this year.

SD PGR
On Monday May 28th volunteers will stand a Silent Vigil From 3:00 pm To 3:30 pm at the grave sites/home of our War On Terror KIAs here in South Dakota. This is to honor their service and sacrifice to our country. Often family members will be present and appreciate our respect.
