Yes those shots from TO islands pretty much capture only the most boring part of city center (aka financial district) and sterile condos/office buildings. The street level activity in that area is somewhat depressing, almost like any other deserted business district in American cities.
Yeah that area is still very much a work in dev though truth be told for most tourist's the CN Tower and Ripley's will be enough to draw them to it. Plus you got Skydome and ACC not far but no this isn't the place to go to get a slice of urbanity in the city.

Well we all know how those always go in 'good fun' lol - but I was just capturing the differences between the two in terms of where they have focused the development of the main 'line' - one more parallel to its lake, the other more perpendicular. It wansn't my intent to get into a vs other than to capture the major difference in dev to a well known great lakes peer who also has a skyline close to a lake..
This pic gives a better idea what i'm talking about.. Toronto's skyline is more like a T if you will and taking a traditional pic only captures the top of the "T" - the main line is north/south of the core all the way from the lake (south) to now north of Bloor.
This pic shows development from south to north not even including the CBD and you'd never see this from the islands.. It underscores how massive T.O's core really is if you just get 'traditional' out of your mind lol.. Anyway sorry for being Anti-Canada and not so humble about T.O - oops its just a small city with small time development
