A friend we used to work with in Florida moved to the Monterey area and we
met up with him last weekend I think it was. He took us to the Officer
homestead outside of Monterey and I got these photos.
That is where the confederate soldiers were killed by union soldiers. Their graves are up the hill behind the field. Its a shame that Mr. Walt hasn't restored the house.

What is the history of this house? Was it built before the Civil War? Why is it called the Officer homestead? Was it used by Confederate and/or Union troops?

This is the first time I've ever heard of this place. The house looks like it could be restored fairly easily and turned into something interesting. Thanks for sharing your pictures.

The house belonged to and is still in the hands of the Officer family (Mr. Walter Officer, his brother Frank died a few years back). During the civil war six confederate soldiers were guests in the home when it was raided by union soldiers. They were all killed, one executed on the gate post.

Do you know if the Officer family has any plans to do anything with this house? It seems like something this historic would get the attention of some historical society or even the Daughters of the Confederacy.

A few years ago there was an article, not sure if it was Herald or the Monterey paper, about the house and Mr. Officer (Walt) was talking about plans to restore it but nothing has ever come of it. I really wish someone would.

There is an old barn by the house that is pretty cool too. I use to buy hay that was kept in this barn from Mr. Officer (also had to duck in there and wait out a storm). It was built without any nails ( I know there is a name for that but I don't know what it is). I wish they would try to restore that too if it is still standing. I just love old barns.
